26 March 2013
• Amsterdam ArenA, Amsterdam
Referee: M. Clattenburg

R. van der Vaart 12'
R. van Persie 56', 65'
J. Lens 90'
Four goals and it could have been for Louis van Gaal's side. They can probably start their plans for Brazil 2014 after this victory and they could again be a dark horse come the tournament if that performance is anything to go by. I've been Tom Maston and thanks for getting involved this evening.
The Dutch rarely struggle to qualify for tournaments, and they making it look easy again. Six wins from six and not yet at their best. For Romania, they now face a battle to catch Hungary and qualify for the play-offs.
Goal Jeremain Lens
GOAL!!! As the clocks tick towards the end of the 90th minute, the Dutch have a fourth. Maher fires in a low shot that Pantilimon does well to parry, but Lens is on hand to turn in the rebound from close range. No more than the home side deserve.
The final whistle is blown and the Netherlands fully deserved their 4-0 win. Now six consecutive wins in this qualifying campaign.
Almost a fifth now as Lens crosses and Janmaat finds himself on the end of it in the middle, The right-back has been excellent but his header floats just wide of the post.
Yellow Card Alexandru Mihăiţă Chipciu
Late booking for Romania as Chipciu impedes Lens as he tries to get to the byline. Robben has the chance to cross it into the middle from the free-kick but he opts to shoot. His effort is a poor one and flies over.
Robin van Persie
Siem de Jong
Final substitution of the evening, and Robin van Persie won't get his hat-trick tonight. His first was a sublime header and in all honesty he could have five or six. Siem De Jong on in his place.
Netherlands passing it round at ease as the match heads towards the final minutes. The Dutch seem content with their performance this evening.
Rafael van der Vaart
Second change as goalscorer van der Vaart is replaced by Jordy Clasie in midfield.
Good save from Vermeer as Stancu tests him from just outside the area. The goalkeeper parries well, but as the ball is delivered back into the centre Mutu heads wide.
More good play from the Dutch as Janmaat and Lens combine down the right before finding van Persie in the box. The striker decides against shooting and tries to flick it back. He can't pull it off, though, and the ball is cleared.
Jonathan De Guzmán
First change of the evening for the Netherlands as de Guzman departs, with Adam Maher on in his place.
You have to feel that Romania have left it too late for Mutu to have an impact. They do get a sight of goal though as Rat gets forward from left-back. His shot from the edge of the area is never troubling Vermeer though.
Final roll of the dice for Romania, as Mutu is finally introduced. Grozav the man sacrificed.
Van Persie's two goals means he has now surpassed Johan Cruyff's international goal tally of 33. He is now level with Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and one behind Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Penalty Goal Robin van Persie
GOAL!!! Van Persie makes no mistake, sending Pantilimon the wrong way from the spot. Holland heading for a sixth straight win in Group D.
PENALTY TO NETHERLANDS! This could be it. Vanmaat plays it into Lens down the right. The winger drags it back and Gardos commits to the tackle. He only catches Lens' standing foot and can have no complaints with Clattenburg's decision.
Adrian Popa I
Before the set-piece is taken, the lively Popa is replaced by Gabriel Torje, whose first action is to crash the free-kick straight into the wall. Wasted.
Yellow Card Daley Blind
Daley Blind is booked for a poor tackle from behind on Popa on the edge of the area. Chance for the visitors here.
Alexandru Mihăiţă Chipciu
First change for Romania as Tanase is withdrawn for Chipciu. Still no sign of Adrian Mutu.
Van Persie has the ball in the net again, but Janmaat, who provided the cross was offiside.
Romania still not lying down, but they must do better than this. Tanase wins the ball on the edge of the area but, despite having options either side, shoots well wide.
Goal Robin van Persie
GOAL!!! That is superb from two of the Netherlands' senior men. Robben skips past two Romania defenders before clipping a ball in. Van Persie may not have his shooting boots on, but his head is in working order and he shows superb reactions to nod it over Pantilimon and into the far corner. Breathing space for the Dutch.
Assist Arjen Robben
Another opportunity for Netherlands, and this one comes about after some great persistence by Daley Blind. He keeps the ball alive by the corner flag and plays the ball across goal, but van der Vaart can only scoop it over. Still just 1-0.
WHAT A CHANCE! Robin van Persie hasn't got his goalscoring boots on tonight. A cross from the left isn't dealt with by Gardos, and the ball falls at the Manchester United man's feet. He has time but fires straight at Pantilimon.
Robben tries to get away down the left but can't keep hold of it. The Bayern Munich man cutting a frustrated figure at present.
Yellow Card Bruno Martins Indi
The first booking of the match goes to Netherlands' Bruno Martins Indi, with the defender mistiming a challenge on Popa.
Romania kick-off and the second half is underway.
The teams are back out in Amsterdam and we are ready for the restart.
So what did you think of that opening period? The Dutch deserve their lead but Romania have shown enough going forward late on in the first period to be a threat. Let me know your thoughts on Twitter @maston91 and I'll be back for the second half.
Mark Clattenburg blows the half-time whistle and van der Vaart's goal is the difference at the break.
Brilliant save by Pantilimon as a cross from the left is flicked on by Strootman and acrobatically volleyed by van Persie. The striker catches it well but the goalkeeper is equal to it. The offside flag is up so it wouldn't have counted anyway.
Tanase breaks away down the left but de Guzman does well to fight back and win a free-kick. Romania's front three are causing a few problems.
The Dutch try coming forward in an effort to take the pressure of their defence, but sloppy play gives the ball away again. Netherlands praying for half time at the moment.
Really good period for Romania, and this is the closest they've come. Popa gets it on the corner of the area and fires low across goal. Vermeer gets down well and gets enough of a touch to tip it wide. Netherlands looking to weather this storm.
Better from the visitors, as Tanase gets his foot on the ball. He looks for Stancu over the top, and Vermeer has to be alert to collect the pass around the penalty spot.
Romania are growing in confidence slightly after conceding early, and Stancu and Popa combine well before the latter fires wildly over the top.
The Romanian supporters are doing their best to get their team going, but it doesn't seem to be working yet. How long before Mutu is introduced?
Sight of goal for Romania, but Grozav's long range effort dribbles wide. Dutch defence been impressive inside the first half hour.
Van Persie has done everything but score so far this evening. This time he plays a delightful ball to van der Vaart, who in turn looks for Lens. The winger can't bring it under control and it rolls out for a goal kick.
We haven't seen much of Arjen Robben on the left this evening yet, and with what is happening down the opposite flank, we may see the Bayern Munich man signalling to swap sides at some point.
More joy down the right for Netherlands, with Janmaat again pushing forward. This time Strootman meets his cross but his header falls harmlessly wide.
Romania win a free-kick midway inside the hosts' half, and it is curled towards Tamas at the back post. The defender looks to head it back across but can only find Vermeer in the Dutch goal.
Stancu's forray into the box apart, Romania have barely ventured into the Dutch half as of yet. Only one winner in this one if it continues that way.
One-way traffic at the moment, and the attack again comes down the Dutch right. Janmaat gets forward well and picks out van Persie. The Manchester United man is free in the box but heads straight at the goalkeeper.
Assist Robin van Persie
Goal Rafael van der Vaart
GOAL!!! Razvan Rat has suffered a torrid couple of minutes. A poor touch allows Lens to again break, and though his ball was behind van Persie, the striker did well to lay it into Rafael van der Vaart's path. The Hamburg man makes no mistake from the edge of the area, beating Pantilimon low to his right.
GREAT CHANCE! Jeremain Lens gets away from Rat down the right and sends in a great ball between the defence and goalkeeper. Van Persie meets it on the volley but is stretching and puts it just over the bar. Romania have had their warning.
First shot in anger of the match and it falls to the Netherlands. Captain Kevin Strootman picks up the ball around 35 yards from goal and unleashes a superb curling effort that Pantilimon can only parry away from danger.
Romania aren't just going to come here and defend. Popa gets away down the right and lays the ball across for the onrushing Stancu. The striker closes in on goal, but a heavy touch allows Vermeer to smother the ball before clearing upfield.
Patient build-up play from the Dutch, and the ball eventually finds Robin van Persie on the edge of the area. The Manchester United man is flagged for offisde, though, and the visitors can finally have a touch.
Netherlands get us underway in their all white kit. A bit of a change from their usual orange.
We are ready for kick-off. Can the Dutch keep up their outstanding record?
Mark Clattenburg, the English referee, on duty tonight. He'll be familiar to some of the Dutch line-up, with four of their starting eleven having played in the Premier League.
The teams are out at the Amsterdam ArenA, and the national anthems are underway. Not long till kick-off now.
For Romania, Adrian Mutu is only on the substitutes bench. The striker equalled Gheorghe Hagi's national goalscoring record of 35 strikes against Hungary on Friday, and will be looking to break that record here should he get on.
No Wesley Sneijder tonight for Oranje, but Arjen Robben starts to make his 66th appearance for his country. That equals the number of caps won by the legendary Ruud Gullit
These two sides have already met in the group, with Netherlands running out 4-1 winners in Romania. A repeat wouldn't be a huge shock to anyone.
Romania: Pantilimon, Gardos, Rat, Chiriches, Tamas, Bourceanu, Popa, Tanase, Pintilii, Stancu, Grozav
Netherlands: Vermeer, Martins Indi, Janmaat, de Vrij, Blind, Robben, de Guzman, Strootman, van der Vaart, Lens, van Persie
The teams have been announced as we approach kick-off...
So, can Netherlands impose themselves even more on Group D? The Dutch have a 100% record in the qualifying campaign thus far and are big favourites to make it six wins from six this evening. Romania are third in the group, five points adrift of Louis van Gaal's side.
