Rarely tested throughout, aside from punching one or two crosses, but made one crucial reaction save to Cole's turn and shot from close range.
Adopted something of a sweeper role, frequently carrying the ball upfield to start the attack for his side. Another impressive display from the Nothern Ireland international, who is continuing to flourish in the absence of Nemanja Vidic.
Marshalled the lacklustre Carroll effectively and was confident and commanding in the air all night. One excellent block on Nolan in injury time summed up his strong performance.
Did not venture forward as often as he usually does, but manned the left flank impressively, stopping Jarvis and Taylor in their tracks. Almost cost his side the three points with a careless late backpass, however.
Alert to the early threat of Jarvis, making a number of key interceptions while getting forward with his customary confidence.
Tremendous energy early on from the England man, who linked well with Anderson and caused James Tomkins a number of problems. Began to tire in the second half, and was ultimately replaced by Young.
Picked up where he left off against QPR, hussling the Hammers' midfield and driving towards the heart of the defence. Greeted by a deserved ovation when he was replaced late by Jones.
Set up Van Persie for the opening goal, and marshalled his defence with a usual mix of solid passing and intuitive positional play. Booked for bringing down Cole late on.
Blasted over from a tight angle early on before seeing a low shot superbly tipped round the post by Jaaskelainen. His movement caused West Ham problems all evening.
A constant force between the lines, linking midfield and attack with some excellent close control and effective passing. Faded slightly from the game as proceedings wore on and was replaced by Welbeck.
R. van Persie
Struck with barely a minute on the clock, with his shot taking a huge deflection before nestling into the net. He was a menace to Reid whenever he peeled away to the left, and came close to adding to his tally with a free-kick.
Helpless for the opener, but saved superbly from Chicharito's low shot on the half-hour mark and again from Rooney 30 minutes later. Performed well to keep the score at 1-0.
Was left a little bemused at times by United's attacking movement and Rafael's lively runs forward. Ventured forward a little more as West Ham pushed for an equaliser.
Unfortunate to see the ball deflect up and over Jaaskelainen inside the opening minute following Van Persie's shot. A strong presence in the air, reading the hosts' movement up front well.
Eager going forward but often failed to get the better of Evra. Made a brilliant block to deny Van Persie a clear opening in the final quarter of the game.
Deployed just in front of his back four to add some extra cover, but was often exposed by the pace and trickery of Rooney.
Often caught out by the movement of United's front three, though he did grow into the game into the second half.
Looked a threat on the counter on but, on the rare occassion he got the better of Evra or Rafael, he was let down too often by his final ball. Replaced by Maiga on 70 minutes.
Booked early on for tripping Cleverley and seemed to lose the physical edge to his game as a result. Never really impacted upon midfield as much as he would have liked.
Strong physical presence but exposed by the pace of Anderson and Cleverley. Became more effective in the second half as he looked to push further forward, but began to tire as the game wore on.
Hit the top of the Stretford end with an unusually-wild shot just before the break, which summed up his contribution in the first half. Switched to left flank in the second half and provided a handful of menacing crosses.
Came close with one volleyed effort but scuffed a number of other opportunities. His control let him down too often as he struggled to hold up the ball and link with his supporting midfielders. Replaced to a chorus of boos from the home faithful just after the hour mark.
