Mick Cooke's side put their 7-1 Setanta Sports Cup final defeat behind them with a narrow win over Limerick at Thomond ParkDrogheda United edged out Limerick in a close match at Thomond Park, with Paul O'Conor's solo goal proving the difference between the two sides.
Belgian attacker Axel Bossekota had an early chance for the hosts, and looked lively every time he had the ball at his feet. However, he really should have done better on the quarter-hour mark, but squandered his shot when put through on goal by Craig Curran. Despite Limerick's positive start, they fell behind to a wonderful solo effort from Paul O'Conor, who won the ball in midfield, and ran with it before unleashing a shot past Barry Ryan. Cathal Brady went close to doubling Drogheda's advantage soon after, but saw his shot cleared off the line, while Gary O'Neill missed a gilt-edged opportunity before the interval.
Drogheda continued to dominate after the break, with Cassidy crossing for Gavin Brennan on 53 minutes. However, the midfielder could only head over following great work by his teammate. At the other end, a rare Limerick chance was halted by a fantastic block from Derek Prendergast. With just over 10 minutes to go, Joe Gamble received his marching orders for a second bookable offence, causing plenty of reaction in the Limerick bench, forcing referee Dave McKeon to intervene. Gary O'Neill went close again late on, despite Limerick trying to force a way back into the tie.
Drogheda held on for victory, seeing them climb up to sixth in the table ahead of Shamrock Rovers.
