Two goals from David McMillan and a second-half strike from Robbie Benson gave the Students a surprise win over high-flying DundalkUCD responded from going a goal down after two minutes to record a 3-2 victory over Dundalk at Oriel Park. Pat Hoban gave the hosts the lead, but two goals from David McMillan put the Students ahead before Robbie Benson added a third. Hoban scored his second goal of the game late on, but Dundalk could not find a crucial equaliser.
A cool finish from Pat Hoban saw Dundalk go ahead inside two minutes after a good ball in from John Dillon. Tiarnan Mulvenna then went close for the hosts before UCD struck back from the spot. John Sullivan fouled Gary Burke in the area, with David McMillan putting the ball past Peter Cherrie.
Dundalk were on top for most of the first-half, but went in level at the break after Tiarnan Mulvenna and Stephen O'Donnell both failed to make chances count. The second-half also opened with a goal, as McMillan added his second. Robbie Benson fed the striker, who netted with an accurate finish.
The hosts went in search of an equaliser, and almost went level through Andy Boyle's header, but stand-in goalkeeper Conor O'Donnell watched the ball go narrowly over. UCD bagged their third through Robbie Benson, squeezing the ball past Cherrie after linking up with McMillan.
Gary Burke went close for UCD with 10 minutes to go, and three minutes later Dundalk found a way back into the game. Dane Massey crossed for Hoban to head home and set up an exciting finale. However, despite Dundalk throwing everyone forward, the Students held on for their fourth win of the season, helping them move further from the relegation zone.
