Lilywhites boss Stephen Kenny came up against his former employers but could not overturn Trevor Croly's side in what was a thrilling encounter

Shamrock Rovers were made to rue a missed penalty at Oriel Park as they were held to a 0-0 draw by 10-man Dundalk in the opening game of the season.

Trevor Croly's side threatened to take the lead on eight minutes when Billy Dennehy's header from a Gary McCabe cross troubled Lilywhites goalkeeper Peter Cherrie, but the Scottish shot-stopper recovered to prevent a goal. Dundalk soon increased their tempo and on 18 minutes, former Bristol City striker Patrick Hoban tested Barry Murphy with a shot after some incisive play from Kurtis Byrne, but the Rovers goalkeeper was equal to it.

Shamrock Rovers had the opportunity to take the lead in the second half when Billy Dennehy was felled in the box by Dane Massey. However, Gary McCabe slipped during his run-up and sent the penalty tamely towards Cherrie, who happily received the ball.

Stephen Kenny's men almost secured a late home victory on 79 minutes, when Dane Massey found Vinny Faherty in the Rovers' box, but the former St Patrick's Athletic forward's header was easily collected by Murphy. Massey then received his marching orders in the dying moments of the game when he received a second yellow card for a reckless foul on Karl Sheppard on the edge of the box.

But the Hoops were unable to capitalise and Ronan Finn drove his free kick straight at the Dundalk wall and the game finished as a draw.
