Two goals from Gary O'Neill were enough to see off late UCD fight back with the Students returning to the foot of the Airtricity Premier Division tableUCD returned to the bottom of the Airtricity Premier Division after Drogheda were made to work hard for three points at Hunky Dorks Park. Drogs dominated throughout and they often dazzled their opponents with great midfield movement and creativity. Two goals from Gary O'Neill and a strike from Gavin Brennan gave Drogheda the win, despite Robbie Benson and Dean Clarke helping the Students get back into the game.
Both Ryan Brennan and Gavin Brennan were key to this early dominance with the latter's clever play allowing Gary O'Neill to tap in for Drogheda's opener. Gavin Brennan soon made it two thanks to a mistake from UCD keeper Mark McGinley. To their credit, UCD recovered well were rewarded from late first half pressure after Sean Russell broke down the right and set up Robbie Benson to score from close range.
Drogheda began to assert themselves again in the second half and O'Neill quickly returned their two goal cushion, neatly finishing a fantastic counter attacking move. UCD again had to fight hard to stay in the game and some smart substitutions from Martin Russell paid off after Dean Clarke came on to make it 3-2. The Students almost levelled soon after and Shane Grimes was forced to clear off the line from a David McMillan effort. However, Mick Cooke's side managed to hold on for a deserved but hard fought win.
UCD worked hard to stay in contention, and may use that fact to built their confidence ahead of their next game. They travel to Shamrock Rovers next week, as they search for a first victory.
