Live Commentary

  • So that's it from me on a frustrating night for Newcastle, they now face a tough challenge in the second-leg in Kharkiv but can take heart from a performance which should have seen them take a lead to Ukraine. This is Nicholas McGee signing off!
  • Full-time at St James' Park is met with a chorus of boos as the fans voice their disapproval towards the officials after seeing two goals incorrectly chalked off for offside. The fans applaud the players but care clearly annoyed at the decisions that did not go their way.
  • 90' + 3'
Late drama as the ball breaks to Cisse in the box following a scramble, but he is again denied as Goryainov pulls of a great save to prevent his diving header from finding the net.
  • 90' + 1'
    Yellow Card Juan Torres
  • 90'

  • 71'
And another opportunity for the Magpies, Sylvain Marveaux latching on to Sosa's loose pass before Goryainov sprinted out to collect.
  • 70'
Huge opening for Newcastle as Cisse meets Santon's left-wing cross only to see his strike brilliantly saved by Goryainov.
  • 67'
It's all gone a bit flat for Newcastle in the second half, they look completely bereft of ideas at present.
  • 62'
    SubstitutionGabriel Obertan Sylvain Marveaux
  • 46'
Newcastle get the second half underway and immediately have a chance with Cisse firing over from a tight angle.
  • The referee blows for half-time at St James' Park, it has been an entertaining contest so far and although both sides have had chances it is the hosts who have the right to feel aggrieved after seeing Papiss Cisse's strike wrongly ruled out for offside.
  • 43'
Now it's Newcastle's turn to go close as Sissoko links up with Yanga-Mbiwa but cannot control the return pass and Goryainov is there to smother.
  • 42'
Really good game this one but both teams struggling to produce the killer ball in the final third, Metalist have another opportunity as Marlos rolls in Sosa, who flashes the ball across the face of goal.
  • 39'
Pinball in the Metalist penalty area as the visitors fail to clear a free kick, allowing Obertan to play in Cisse, whose close-range effort is cleared off the line.
  • 37'
End-to-end stuff here as Papa Gueye does well to prevent Jonas Gutierrez's pull back from reaching Cabaye, before Marlos fires into the side-netting for the Ukrainians.
  • 35'
Cleiton Xavier is living up to his reputation as Metalist's most dangerous player, working some space before firing a shot straight down the throat of Tim Krul.
  • 33'
    Yellow Card Yohan Cabaye
  • 32'
Newcastle are beginning to dominate now and have another opportunity to go ahead when Cabaye plays in Cisse, who sees his low shot well saved by Goryainov.
  • 31'
Cheikh Tiote has a half chance for Newcastle, firing wide after Steven Taylor had flicked a corner into his path.
  • 29'
Now the hosts almost fall behind but are saved by their goalkeeper Tim Krul who produces a fine stop to prevent Cleiton Xavier from heading Metalist into the lead.
  • 28'
    Yellow Card Cheikh Tiote
  • 26'
The Magpies are continuing to push for the opener and perhaps that controversial offside call will act as an extra incentive.
  • 23'
Newcastle have the ball in the net but it is inexplicably ruled out after Sissoko broke free before squaring the ball for Cisse to tap home. Replays show that the ex-Toulouse man was a good couple of yards onside, a very poor late flag from the referee's assistant.
  • 20'
Gabriel Obertan looks like he could well be Newcastle's biggest threat, the winger breaks free down the right-flank but is unable to deliver a cross of any quality.
  • 17'
First big chance of the game as Moussa Sissoko finds Gabriel Obertan on the edge of the area, and the former Manchester United man is unlucky to see his effort roll just wide of the post.
  • 14'
Almost an opening for Newcastle as Moussa Sissoko and Papiss Cisse engage in a neat one-two, however Cisse is flagged for offside and the move comes to nought.
  • 12'
Metalist are just starting to come into this contest a little more, enjoying a good spell of possession in the Newcastle half, still no real attacking opportunities at either end though.
  • 9'
The game is beginning to liven up a touch, with both teams trading corners which have come to nothing in the last few minutes.
  • 6'
No real chances to report as yet, Metalist look prepared to sit deep and allow Newcastle to have most of the possession.
  • 3'
Slow start at St James' Park, Newcastle are seeing more of the ball but the two teams look to be just feeling each other out at the moment.
  • 1'
    Metalist get the game underway!
  • Metalist are controlling possession as the clock ticks towards the final seconds it looks like this one may end goalless.
  • No more glaring chances yet for Newcastle, but you sense that another may come before the final whistle is blown.
  • The home fans are roaring their side on, can they find the goal their second-half play probably merits.
  • Metalist are beginning to tire, can the introduction of Shola Ameobi prove vital?
  • Replays suggest that Cisse was again in an onside position, Newcastle can feel very hard done by.
  • More controversy at St James' Park as Newcastle again have a goal ruled out for offside. Cisse the victim once more as he sees another effort chalked off after latching onto Yanga-Mbiwa's well placed cross.
  • A break in play at the moment as Juan Manuel Torres receives treatment for a knock.
  • Still Newcastle are looking to create things and Jonas Gutierrez hits a decent effort which goes just wide.
  • It maybe time for Alan Pardew to make a change, Metalist look quite comfortable at the moment.
  • It's all very scrappy at the moment, the first hour has been mostly frantic, so this is quite a dramatic change of pace.
  • The game has died down somewhat in the last few minutes, Newcastle could really do with a goal sooner rather than later.
  • Half a chance for the hosts as Yanga-Mbiwa curls a long-range effort over the bar.
  • The second half has started in a similar vein to the first, with both sides eager to attack and grasp the initiative.
  • French flags galore at St James' Park once again, the home fans have clearly embraced the Gallic revolution taking place on Tyneside.
  • Out come the two sides to the traditional Europa League anthem.
  • The teams are in the tunnel and ready for action
  • So Alan Pardew keeps his promise and names a strong line-up for this tie, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa makes his debut, coming in for the ineligible Mathieu Debuchy, Cheikh Tiote replaces James Perch and Gabriel Obertan takes the place of Yoan Gouffran on the right-wing.
  • FC Metalist Kharkiv: Goryainov, Villagra, Gueye, Torsiglieri, Fininho, Torres, Marlos, Edmar, Cleiton Xavier, Sosa, Cristaldo. Subs: Disljenkovic, Berezovchuk, Shelayev, Blanco, Jakson, Krasnopyorov, Willian.
