Trevor Croly's side recorded a one-goal victory over in-form Dundalk, with Sean O'Connor's strike making the difference at Tallaght Stadium

Shamrock Rovers recorded their third win of the season with a comfortable win over Dundalk at Tallaght Stadium. Sean O'Connor's strike was the only goal of the game despite the Hoops having the greater share of possession for long periods.

The game at the Tallaght Stadium got off to a crunching start as Pat Hoban went into the referee's notebook in the first minute. Ronan Finn looked lively in the Rovers midfield, and had two good early chances. On-loan striker Karl Sheppard should have done better with Sean O'Connor's cross in the 30th minute, but Peter Cherrie was equal to his effort.

The Hoops finally broke the deadlock in first-half stoppage time. Sheppard's ball in was poorly cleared, allowing Sean O'Connor to collect and strike a great shot past Cherrie. The hosts continued to prevail in the midfield battle after the break, and saw Danny Ledwith hit the post just minutes after the restart.

Once again, Finn tested Cherrie, but the Dundalk keeper looked sharp and prevented his side from going further behind. At the other end, Derek Foran and Pat Sullivan were doing a good job cleaning up at the back, and prevented Dundalk from getting a sight at Barry Murphy's goal.

The win sees Shamrock Rovers overtake Drogheda United in the table, while Dundalk are now eight points adrift of leaders Sligo Rovers.
