St Patrick's Athletic climbed to sixth in the Airtricity Premier Division table with a one goal win over Limerick. Killian Brennan's first-half penalty was the difference between the sides on a cold evening at Thomond Park.

Pat's had been out of action for the past two weeks due to postponements, but looked match sharp from the outset, with Killian Brennan testing Shane Cusack early on. Danny Galbraith went close with a long-range effort soon after, but Pat's took the lead on 19 minutes from the spot. Ian Bermingham was fouled in the area, and Brennan stepped up to convert the penalty.

Craig Curran should have equalised a minute later, but shot straight at Brendan Clarke with the goal at his mercy. Brennan almost doubled the Saints' lead before half-time, but his free-kick curled past the post. The visitors were also the better side after half-time, with John Russell seeing his header come back off the bar.

Limerick's best chance to equalise came from a great ball from Shane Tracy, picking out Stephen Bradley, but the midfielder couldn't direct his shot past Clarke. The away keeper did well to keep out Tracy's free-kick 10 minutes later, as Clarke held on to keep a clean sheet.

The victory moves St Pat's up to sixth, but Liam Buckley's side have two games in hand over all the teams ahead of them, and tonight's away win could give them the impetus to kick-start their season.
