Chris Forrester scored an impressive hat-trick to see the Saints climb to third in the table, and send Shelbourne bottom

Three goals from in-form Chris Forrester and a close-range effort from Conan Byrne gave St Patrick's Athletic a comfortable victory over Shelbourne, as the two sides finally got to play each other after having the initial tie postponed due to a waterlogged pitch last month.

Pat's started brightly, with John Russell twice going close in the opening few minutes. The hosts saw plenty of the ball in the first half, but Ger Hanley was kept quiet for the first half hour as the Saints failed to convert possession into chances. At the other end Dean Kelly was Shels' most dangerous player, and almost gave his side the lead on 39 minutes, forcing Dave Ryan into a great save. Just before half-time a mistake from Brian Shortall allowed Chris Forrester in to open the scoring.

Forrester was also involved in Pat's second goal just after half-time, knocking down a corner for Conan Byrne to slot home. Liam Buckley's side were three up in the 43rd minute, with Forrester striking from distance to leave Ger Hanley no chance.

The impressive Ian Bermingham had the ball in the net himself, but was ruled out for offside as the Saints searched for a fourth. Byrne also had a great chance to double his tally 15 minutes from time, but was distracted by the on-rushing Hanley and failed to connect with the ball. However, Forrester did add to his tally 8 minutes from time, with a scuffed long-range effort beating Hanley once again to give Pat's a 4-0 victory.

The scoreline sees the Saints climb to third place, while Shelbourne slip down to last.
