Player Ratings: Arsenal 2-0 Montpellier

The north London outfit confirmed their passage to the knockout stages thanks to goals from Jack Wilshere and Lukas Podolski and a helping hand from Schalke against Olympiakos

    Wojciech Szczesny

Was troubled just once in the first half, which he handled well when rushing out to meet Charbonnier. Was virtually untroubled in the second period.

  • Bacary Sagna

    Bacary Sagna

Gave Arsenal another option with his runs from full-back, linking up well with Oxlade-Chamberlain or overlapping, and supplied a handful of dangerous crosses which Giroud failed to capitalise on. Quieter in the second half as the defence sat back.

  • Per Mertesacker

    Per Mertesacker

A quiet evening for the centre-back, but not entirely his own doing. Montpellier showed little threat and the German tidied up with ease and composure.

  • Thomas Vermaelen

    Thomas Vermaelen

Barely troubled at the back and supplied a fine out-swinging cross for Giroud to set up Wilshere’s opener after cutting inside on the right flank. A neat display.

  • Laurent Koscielny

    Laurent Koscielny

Smashed a great header against the crossbar from Wilshere's cross for Arsenal's first sight of goal and continued his forward runs with mixed outcomes. Rarely tested at the back.

  • Mikel Arteta

    Mikel Arteta

Was fairly quiet in the first half as neither side managed to assert themselves in the game. Tried to spark a number of attacks but often found his passing slightly astray. Picked up in the second half, but not the most convincing performance.

  • Jack Wilshere

    Jack Wilshere

Looks to be slowly getting back to his best after his lengthy injury layoff. Combined well with Cazorla on a handful of occasions before running onto Giroud’s clever knockdown to break the deadlock. Was amongst the action throughout. Will be delighted with his first goal in nearly two years.

  • Santi Cazorla

    Santi Cazorla

After a dazzling display in the north London derby, the Spaniard showed his more subdued side with a few wayward passes in the first half. However, he showed signs of a burgeoning partnership with Wilshere after the break as his presence grew. Was withdrawn with six minutes remaining.

  • Lukas Podolski

    Lukas Podolski

Found himself isolated on the left-hand side of a front three in the first half and often found much more luck when cutting inside. Enjoyed an interesting battle with Yanga-Mbiwa, before beating the right-back for pace to volley home a stunning effort from 18 yards to extend his side’s lead. A strong display, but evidently more keen on a central role.

  • Olivier Giroud

Olivier Giroud Top of the Match

The striker’s upturn in form continued against his former side. Despite little luck in front of goal himself, provided the assist for both of Arsenal’s goals, with a neat downward header for Wilshere’s before a smart lofted pass to feed Podolski for 2-0. A solid display.

  • Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
    24

    Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Was lively on his first start since October 3 with a number of darting runs down the right. An unsung hero in the build-up of Arsenal’s second goal by dragging a number of defenders out of position for Giroud and Podolski to strike. Was withdrawn with 20 minutes remaining.

    Aaron Ramsey

Replaced Oxlade-Chamberlain with 20 minutes remaining and slotted into the game well, without particularly impressing.

    Francis Coquelin

Given six minutes at the end of the game.

  • Gervinho

His comeback from injury continued with six minutes at the end of the game.

    Geoffrey Jourdren

Was completely untroubled in the first half and could do little about either of Arsenal’s goals. Was not helped by a plodding backline.

  • Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa

    1.50

    Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa

Lost possession on the edge of his own area to gift Podolski a shooting opportunity – which he was lucky that the German did not do better with. Again lost out to the striker for Arsenal's second after being outmuscled. Otherwise, showed good positional sense.

  • H. Bedimo

    1.50

    H. Bedimo

Tried to get down the flanks to support his flailing midfield, and nearly found Charbonnier on one occasion, only to over-hit the pass and then get caught out of position at the back.

  • Daniel Congré
    2
    1
    1.50

    Daniel Congré

Often found himself all at sea amongst a poor defence, although hardly covered himself in glory throughout after time and time again finding himself stretched by Arsenal.

  • Abdelhamid El Kaoutari

    2.00

    Abdelhamid El Kaoutari

The final piece in a below-par display by the struggling Ligue 1 side's backline. Despite not being the worst piece in the defence by keeping Oxlade-Chamberlain fairly in check, did not scream confidence.

  • Mathieu Deplagne
    2

    Mathieu Deplagne

After a fairly assured first-half display, was over-run in midfield after the break once Cazorla started to assert himself.

  • Younes Belhanda

    1.50

    Younes Belhanda

Went close with a speculative effort from 30 yards in the first half, but otherwise very quiet. A poor showing from the highly rated attacker.

  • M. Estrada

    M. Estrada

Was reduced to long-range efforts which only proved to gift Arsenal goal kicks rather than aid his team in any way.

  • Rémy Cabella

    2.00

    Rémy Cabella

Tried to spark his team into life on the right-hand side by consistently trying to find Charbonnier in the first half but often over-hit or simply misplaced his passes. Struggled similarly in the second half as Arsenal grew with confidence. Was withdrawn with 20 minutes remaining.

  • Anthony Mounier

Anthony Mounier Flop of the Match

A very, very poor performance by the otherwise reliable forward. Failed to assert any sort of threat onto the Arsenal backline. A display to forget.

  • Gaetan Charbonnier

    1
    1.50

    Gaetan Charbonnier

Could of perhaps done better with an early chance in the first half, only to be denied by Szczesny’s quick thinking. Otherwise, hustled and bustled with nothing forthcoming. Was withdrawn with 20 minutes remaining.

Substitutions

  • Joris Marveaux

    Joris Marveaux

A late substitute with 11 minutes remaining.

  • Jonas Martin

    Jonas Martin

Was introduced with 20 minutes to go. Was unable to change the momentum of the game as Arsenal’s presence grew.

  • Emanuel Herrera

    Emanuel Herrera

As with Martin, the flow of the game did not help the 68-minute arrival. Had little-to-no impact on the game.
