Player Ratings: Brazil 3-2 Honduras

The Central American underdogs twice threatened to pull off an upset, but they played with 10 men for 60 minutes and the Selecao were able to fight back to secure a semi-final spot

    Gabriel

It was 50/50 as to whether he could have done anything for their first goal and he definitely could not do anything about the superbly-placed second. Saved a few shots that were hit straight at him from free-kicks and long shots but had little else to do.

  • Rafael

    Rafael

His battle with Orlin Peralta was an entertaining one to watch and the Manchester United right-back probably got the better of his Honduran opponent over 90 minutes.

    Thiago Silva

Although defensive lapses in the back four are not entirely his fault, as captain he should have marshalled his back-line more efficiently in the first half an hour. Had a lot less to do after half-time but usually kept his concentration for when Honduras did attack.

    Juan

The centre-back was torn to pieces once or twice by Mario Martinez early on but once settled into the game, he looked a lot sharper.

  • Marcelo

    Marcelo

Was more reserved in his runs forward on Saturday even after Wilmer Crisanto, the man he was marking, was sent off after 33 minutes. However, his defending was still top notch and Honduras rarely had any success along that flank because of him.

  • Sandro

    Sandro

The Tottenham midfielder had a much tougher task on his hands than against New Zealand, where he looked imperious because of the poor opposition. Yellow carded for a tackle on Espinoza on the halfway line then, strangely, subbed with 10 minutes left of the first half for Danilo even though he did not look injured and had played OK.

  • Rômulo

    Rômulo

Restored to the starting line-up after being rested in their final Group C game, the central midfielder was a key cog in the Selecao set-up. Booked for a crunching tackle in the 65th minute and was constantly a physical presence in the centre for the side.

  • Oscar

    Oscar

A sublime pass could have put Brazil ahead just before Honduras’ opening goal. His work rate all match was admirable and, although he did not have an assist to speak of, he was an architect of many of the South American attacks.

  • Leandro Damião

    Leandro Damião

The Internacional striker should have really put Brazil ahead with 30 seconds gone but he scuffed his strike way wide. Too fancy for his own good when on the ball, but he drew his team level in the first half with a tap-in. His rating shot up slightly when he pulled off some of the finest skill of the match with a clever turn and smashed-in goal to send Brazil 3-2 ahead.

  • Neymar

    Neymar

His first touch let him down from Oscar’s excellent lobbed through ball in the first 15 minutes. Brought boos from the crowd after a tackle on him from Wilmer Crisanto saw the Honduran right winger sent off. Those boos continued after he won Brazil a penalty and scored it to draw them level at 2-2. Always looked lively on the ball but needs to learn not to go to ground too often as the referee stopped giving calls in his favour after a while.

  • Hulk

    Hulk

His pace scared the life out of Honduras’ defenders and he cleverly set up Brazil’s first goal. Brought off for Lucas Moura midway through the second half.

Substitutions

  • Danilo

    Danilo

Brought on for Sandro just after the Honduras sending off, though nobody in the stadium apart from Mano Menezes knows why. Helped steady the midfield ship by sitting just in front of Romulo and just behind Oscar.

    Lucas

The reported Inter and Manchester United target was brought on for Hulk but did little of note during his relatively short time on the pitch.

  • Alexandre Pato

    Alexandre Pato

Brought on for Damiao, he did not play long enough to merit a rating.

  • J. Mendoza

    J. Mendoza

A super stretching save denied Damiao an equaliser on 36 minutes but all his hard work was ruined when he rushed unnecessarily out which caused the South Americans to go ahead. Could do little with Neymar’s well-struck penalty, but should have closed Damiao down quicker for Brazil’s third goal.

  • W. Crisanto

    W. Crisanto

Looked lively for the first 30 minutes but was sent off in the 33rd after two quick yellow cards in the space of two minutes. Poor refereeing but both tackles were clumsy, although they were more mistimed than malicious.

    Maynor Figueroa

Semi-assisted the Honduras goal when trying to win a penalty to no avail, the Wigan Athletic player tested Gabriel with a scorching free-kick not long after Los Catrachos went 1-0 up. Needless pass inside the box early on in the second half brought about Brazil’s second equaliser.

  • J. Velásquez

    J. Velásquez

The Honduras centre-back was harshly booked for a tackle on Oscar in which he got the ball after 16 minutes. He does, however, deserve some of the blame for Brazil’s equaliser as he reacted slowly to the loose ball on the line. He also fouled Neymar to give Brazil a penalty just after his side went 2-1 ahead.

  • O. Peralta

    O. Peralta

The left midfielder tested Rafael on occasion but quietened down once they were reduced to 10 men.

    J. Leverón

Dealt better with the Brazil attackers than some of his team-mates, but the centre-back was still buckling under pressure far too often.

    A. Peralta

The right-back found it hard to deal with the pace of the Brazil wingers and had to resort to shirt-tugging too often. At fault for Brazil’s equaliser with half-time looming and struggled with the might of Marcelo and Neymar on his flank.

  • Mario Martínez

    Mario Martínez

Volleyed in an excellently improvised opener for Honduras in the 12th minute. Was anonymous for the rest of the match and frustrate the crowd with some of his unnecessary diving.

  • R. Espinoza

    3.50

    R. Espinoza

Battled hard in centre-midfield, lucky not to be booked for a studs-up tackle on Marcelo. Scored Honduras’ second with a beautifully curled shot into the bottom corner from 25 yards. Sent off in stoppage time for dragging down Oscar, which earned him his second yellow card. The red card was deserved but he was given a rapturous applause by the crowd as he walked off for his efforts.

Generally solid but was replaced by Alexander Lopez after 73 minutes as Honduras sought an equaliser.

    J. Bengtson

Prior to the Brazil clash he was the only player to have scored for Los Catrachos, but the striker looked isolated for much of the match and did not have an impact at all. Brought off with a few minutes left of the match.
