Serie A Round 36 Results: Chievo break Roma hearts, Fiorentina turn up heat in top-three race

Elsewhere in Italy, Napoli recorded a big win against a Bologna side with nothing to play for, while both Siena and Palermo saw their hopes of survival left hanging by a thread

ROMA 0-1 CHIEVO

Roma missed a glorious opportunity in their unlikely quest to qualify for next season's Champions League play-offs after Chievo netted in the dying moments to inflict a 1-0 defeat on the Giallorossi.

The capital outfit went into their clash with the Flying Donkeys on the back of a rich vein of form, but that all changed when Boukary Diame's cross found the flying boot of Cyril Thereau in stoppage time.

The victory confirms Chievo's status as a Serie A side for another term, but Roma - whose attacking personnel were no match for Christian Puggioni between the posts - fall to seventh in the standings.

SAMPDORIA 1-1 CATANIA

Sampdoria and Catania could not be separated at the Marassi on Wednesday as both teams cancelled each other out in a 1-1 draw.

The hosts took the lead on 35 minutes when Lorenzo De Silvestri - a right-back by trade - headed in a corner, but the Sicilians had other ideas as Nicolas Spolli nodded a cross past goalkeeper Junior Da Costa midway through the second half.

Catania look destined to miss out on Europa League qualification following their failure to come away with a win, but Blucerchiati, on the other hand, have secured their top-flight distinction for another season.

SIENA 0-1 FIORENTINA

Fiorentina prolonged the race to claim Italy's third and final Champions League spot after they nicked a 1-0 victory over Tuscan rivals Siena.

The winning goal came in the 14th minute of the first half as Manuel Pasqual's cross was turned in by goalscoring centre-back Gonzalo Rodriguez.

The Viola
remain fourth in the league table, four points behind third-placed AC Milan, but Siena will need wins in their last two matches to have any chance of achieving a near-miracle to stay up.

TORINO 0-0 GENOA

Having convincingly beaten Pescara at the weekend and capitalised on Palermo's sudden dip in form, Genoa could afford to play out a stalemate against Torino.

The Ligurians, who wore black armbands after a container-ship crash killed at least seven people in the port of Genoa on Tuesday, were fortunate to rely on their recent good fortune as Rolando Bianchi and Valter Birsa came closest for the Granata.

BOLOGNA 0-3 NAPOLI

Napoli pounced in a second-half salvo to inflict a brutal 3-0 reverse on Bologna at the San Paolo.

After a goalless first period, the Partenopei - already confirmed as Serie A runners-up for 2012-13, dashed out of the blocks as Marek Hamsik opened the scoring with a smash-and-grab.

On the hour mark, Edinson Cavani netted from the penalty spot to find the back of the next for the 36th time this season, before Blerim Dzemaili rounded off the victory with a customary strike.

CAGLIARI 0-1 PARMA

Cagliari's end-of-season slump showed no signs of abating on Wednesday after they fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Parma.

With two defeats in their last three matches and only two wins in eight previous encounters, the Sardinians - temporarily residing in the northern Italian town of Trieste - collapsed with only 10 minutes to go following Aleandro Rosi's opportunist rebound.

PALERMO 2-3 UDINESE

Palermo's hopes of mounting an incredulous escape from the drop was left in tatters on Wednesday after Udinese stole a late 3-2 triumph at the Renzo Barbera.

Inside 10 minutes, the Zebrette - arguably the form team in Serie A - found the opening goal via a counter-attack which Luis Muriel, emerging from deep, swiftly finished off.

But around 20 minutes later, Fabrizio Miccoli restored parity for the Rosanero when he struck home a penalty which crept past Zeljko Brkic.

Nonetheless on the hour mark, Antonio Di Natale's corner was headed in by defender Gabriele Angella, but Palermo came back again thanks to Abel Hernandez's powerful strike from distance.

Yet Udinese were to have to last laugh as Muriel's finish was parried away by Stefano Sorrentino and subsequently rolled into the path of Mehdi Benatia
to push the side into fifth place.
