La Liga Round 16 Results: Malaga overcome Sevilla and Ernesto Valverde's winning run as Valencia boss ends
Manuel Pellegrini's men retained their Champions League position in the table, but the new Los Che boss tasted defeat for the first time

A late Diego Castro penalty secured a point for Getafe as the capital club played out a tight 1-1 draw with Osasuna on Saturday afternoon.
Both sides had a superb opportunity to take the lead in the first period, but neither Nino or Alvaro Vasquez could get the better of their opposition goalkeepers despite being through on goal.

A poor match kicked up a few gears 12 minutes from time when Emiliano Armenteros was sent off for a late tackle on Juan Valera. However, Osasuna thought they had grabbed the points in the closing stages when Kike Sola twisted and turned on the edge of the box before slotting into the bottom corner.
Getafe were not to be denied, however. The referee deemed that the ball hit Osasuna player, Oier, on the hand inside the box. Castro dispatched the penalty to earn a point for his side.MALLORCA 0-1 ATHLETIC BILBAO
Aritz Aduriz continued his fine goalscoring form this season as his strike proved to be the difference between Mallorca and Athletic Bilbao in La Liga.
The opening goal of the match came through Athletic’s first meaningful attack of the match. Andoni Iraola found space on the right and floated a cross into the box for Aduriz to nod home.
From then on the match was the Gorka Iraizoz show. The Basque goalkeeper pulled out a number of world class saves to keep his side in the match, most notably a wonderful stop from a Giovani Dos Santos free kick.
The Islanders peppered the Athletic goal with shots, but an in-form Iraizoz saw Marcelo Bielsa’s men claim the spoils.GRANADA 0-0 REAL SOCIEDAD
Granada claimed a point but made it 450 Liga minutes without scoring on Saturday as they played out a poor 0-0 draw with Real Sociedad.
Sociedad were denied by Roberto after the Granada goalkeeper somehow got across goal to palm away a Diego Ifran cross from a Carlos Vela header. Asier Illarramendi then spurned a decent chance from the edge of the box as he saw his shot sail wide.
This could have come back to haunt the visitors as Granada threatened late on. Odion Ighalo found himself through on goal but saw his weak shot saved by goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, ensuring the honours remained even at the end of play.SEVILLA 0-2 MALAGA
A goal each from Martin Demichelis and Eliseu saw Malaga claim the bragging rights in the Andalusian derby with a 2-0 victory over Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.
However, it was the home side who threatened first and should have been ahead after just three minutes. Alvaro Negredo rushed through on goal and managed to take the ball around Willy Caballero, but a poor touch saw him take the ball slightly wide, and his resulting shot came off the post.
Malaga rallied after the break, and found themselves ahead four minutes after he restart when Demichelis rose high inside the box to head high into the corner following Joaquin’s corner.
The match was put beyond the hosts 20 minutes from time when Federico Fazio saw red after a professional foul on Joaquin. Eliseu netted the penalty to claim the points for Manuel Pellegrini’s men.
ZARAGOZA 0-1 LEVANTE
Levante provisionally moved up to fifth place in the Primera Division with a narrow 1-0 win over Real Zaragoza at La Romareda.
The hosts threatened first, and were unlucky not to edge ahead 12 minutes in when Jose Barkero tried his luck from distance, only to see his strike crash off the post.
The decisive goal came after 20 minutes of play. Ruben Garcia took advantage of a scramble inside the box to latch on to a loose ball and drill home to make it 1-0, a scoreline that Levante saw out for the win.
VALENCIA 0-1 RAYO VALLECANO
A late Alejandro Dominguez penalty dealt Ernesto Valverde his first loss as Valencia boss as Los Che went down 1-0 at home to Rayo.
The Valencia boss had guided his side to away wins in his first three games in charge, but their Mestalla woes continued as they find themselves in closer proximity to the relegation zone than the Champions League places.
Both sides struggled to create any kind of meaningful opening throughout the match, and a goalless draw looked the most likely result. However, Rayo stole the points in dramatic circumstances late one. Tino Costa fouled Roberto Trashorras inside the box and Dominguez came back to haunt his former club with a well-taken penalty.
