    René Adler

Made some absolutely fantastic saves in the first half, particularly from Leitner and Lewandowski, in order to keep his side ahead. Added more fantastic stops in the second half, showing immense quality.

  • Dennis Diekmeier

    3.50

    Dennis Diekmeier

Restricted the advances of Schmelzer by playing his BVB counterpart at his own game. Diekmeier charged up and down his flank all afternoon but afforded Perisic too much space to equalise.

  • Michael Mancienne

    3.50

    Michael Mancienne

Used his body well to defend the ball and shepherd the attackers away from goal. He was solid throughout and managed to help limit the potentially match-altering Lewandowski.

  • Heiko Westermann

    3.50

    Heiko Westermann

Looked a bit laboured at times as he struggled to get the ball away efficiently. Nevertheless, he was dominant in the air and managed to clear, or block, the majority of cross whipped into his area.

  • Marcell Jansen
    10

    3.00

    Marcell Jansen

Seemed lethargic on occasion and always seemed reluctant to put in the work. Struggled with Piszczek, allowing the Pole space to set up BVB's second strike of the game. Yet he helped threaten by always looking forward.

  • Ivo Ilicevic
    20
    3
    4.00

    Ivo Ilicevic

Produced a number of rangy runs down the left flank as he looked to exploit the space behind Piszczek. He had a lot of joy and scored with a powerful effort in the second half after tearing away from the Pole.

  • Milan Badelj
    22
    3
    4.00

    Milan Badelj

Dictated the play from the back for Hamburg whenever the got on the ball by spraying the ball about the pitch with immense quality. Everything flowed through him as he pulled all the strings in a great display.

  • Tolgay Ali Arslan
    8
    5
    3.50

    Tolgay Ali Arslan

Fought for the ball in the middle of the park continually but retained the composure to feed the more advanced players with a number of simple passes. Kept tabs on Gotze to limit the playmaker's influence on the match.

  • Rafael van der Vaart
    21
    5
    3.00

    Rafael van der Vaart

Started the game superbly with an excellent cross that was headed in by Son after just two minutes. His influence waned as BVB controlled possession but set up Ilicevic for his side's second as well.

  • Artjoms Rudņevs
    12
    3
    3.00

    Artjoms Rudņevs

Worked his socks off as the lone striker so that his team always had something to aim for. He was never far from danger and was unfortunate to miss the target with a well-executed over-head kick.

  • Heung-Min Son
    35
    7
    4.50

Heung-Min Son Top of the Match

Handed his side a dream start by finding space in the area to head in the opening goal after two minutes. His pace and direct running caused trouble throughout for Dortmund and he added a lovely second in the 59th minute.

Substitutions

  • Maximilian Beister
    9
    1
    2.50

    Maximilian Beister

Replaced Ilicevic in the 69th minute but was nowhere near as convincing as his team-mate. Did not utilise his pace enough but cleared a goal-bound effort of the line to aid the win.

  • Jacopo Sala
    7
    5

    Jacopo Sala

Came on for Van der Vaart in the closing minutes and could not impact the game.

  • Marcus Berg
    6
    4

    Marcus Berg

Brought on for Rudnevs with 13 minutes remaining and with HSV under pressure, could not do any significant.

  • Roman Weidenfeller
    4
    9
    2.50

    Roman Weidenfeller

Could well have done more to help prevent the first two goals conceded by his side. He was beaten at his near post by both Son and Ilicevic and looked extremely vulnerable in the box. Could do nothing to stop Son's second though.

  • Neven Subotic
    9
    9
    2.50

    Neven Subotic

Was caught out of position on the opening goal and he never really recovered. Looked unusually shaky alongside Hummels and their disorganisation was a large factor in the winning goals for HSV.

  • Mats Hummels
    9
    8
    2.50

    Mats Hummels

Displayed an uncharacteristic lack of awareness as he enabled Son to peel off him and head in an early goal. He failed to offer the same conviction as usual when attacking but was solid at the back thereafter.

  • Lukasz Piszczek
    17
    4
    3.50

    Lukasz Piszczek

Rampaged up and down the right wing for his side and always looked dangerous. His delivery was good and he grabbed an assist for Perisic's second. However, he left too much space which Hamburg exploited.

  • Marcel Schmelzer
    9
    5
    2.50

    Marcel Schmelzer

The left-back had plenty to do as Son and Diekmeier dominated the right flank between them. He offered some great set pieces but looked frustrated at having so much defending to do.

  • Sebastian Kehl
    10
    5
    3.00

    Sebastian Kehl

Found space to knock the ball around and break apart the Hamburg momentum but alongside the inexperienced Leitner it proved too much for him. With so much to do he could not ensure dominance for BVB.

  • Moritz Leitner
    14
    3
    3.50

    Moritz Leitner

Looked very assured when in possession with extreme confidence. His passing was exemplary and did a good job at linking the defence to attack. Pulled a good save from Adler before the break with a curled shot.

  • Mario Götze
    17
    8
    3.50

    Mario Götze

Could not find the space in which to weave his magic effectively. Wherever he went he was followed closely but did well to display a few glimpses of his astounding talent with some quality passes.

  • Marco Reus
    10
    22
    2.00

Marco Reus Flop of the Match

Failed to get involved in the game as he always attempted to do just a bit too much. He either ran into trouble or let the ball get away from him and failed to offer enough support to Lewandowski from the right.

  • Ivan Perisic
    28
    4
    4.00

    Ivan Perisic

Was uninvolved in the first half but could not have contrasted more in the second. Always seemed to be able to find space and managed to net two goals, the first of which was a beauty. Could have added a third with a good free kick but Adler saved well.

  • Robert Lewandowski
    18
    5
    3.00

    Robert Lewandowski

Lacked service for large parts of the game but posed a threat with his eagerness to run at the HSV defence. He was another to be denied by Adler but did well to be a continual nuisance.

Substitutions

  • Jakub Blaszczykowski
    20
    4
    3.00

    Jakub Blaszczykowski

Was brought on to help tire Jansen by combining with Piszczek and did so effectively. He should really have scored in the 66th minute when one-on-one with Adler but the keeper denied him.

  • Julian Schieber
    9
    3
    2.00

    Julian Schieber

Replaced Reus in the 63rd minute but failed to offer any more to Dortmund. He wasted a golden opportunity to equalise as he scuffed a shot straight into Adler's hands in the closing stages.
