Player Ratings: Tottenham 1-0 Sunderland

A sensational late strike from Gareth Bale was not enough as Spurs missed out on a place in next season's Champions League following Arsenal's victory over Newcastle

By Greg Stobart at White Hart Lane

    Hugo Lloris

Had little to do but stayed alert to make a very sharp first-half save to deny Wickham.

  • Jan Vertonghen

    Jan Vertonghen

Classy performance from the Belgian centre-back. Defended well and was always comfortable on the ball as he looked to start Spurs' attacks.

  • Michael Dawson

    Michael Dawson

Comfortable afternoon for the Tottenham defender. Commanding in the air and coped well with the movement of Wickham and Graham.

  • Kyle Walker

    Kyle Walker

The right-back worked hard and always offered an outlet as he joined attacking moves.

  • Benoit Assou-Ekotto

    3
    2.50

    Benoit Assou-Ekotto

Rarely challenged defensively by Johnson and saw plenty of the ball. Delivery in the final third was poor, though.

  • Tom Huddlestone

    5
    2.50

    Tom Huddlestone

Looked rather immobile and overweight but produced some lovely passes as he looked to unlock the Sunderland defence, including one from which Bale should have won a penalty.

  • Aaron Lennon
    12
    3
    2.50

    Aaron Lennon

Lively display as he popped up on both sides of the pitch and looked to run at the Sunderland full-backs. Perhaps lacked confidence around the penalty area.

  • Scott Parker

    2.00

    Scott Parker

A normal day at the office for the central midfielder. Always busy as he hassled and harried off the ball. Lacked invention in his passing and preferred to keep it simple.

  • Gareth Bale

Gareth Bale Top of the Match

Always looked the man most likely to make something happen for Spurs - and scored yet another stunning winning goal to cap a sensational individual season late on. Before that, he had constantly looked to test Mignolet and should have been awarded a penalty in the first half.

  • Clint Dempsey
    7
    3
    2.50

    Clint Dempsey

Played on the left side of midfield and looked to drift inside to provide a goalscoring threat in and around the penalty area. Closest he came was a tame left-footed shot in the first half.

  • Emmanuel Adebayor
    12
    5
    2.50

    Emmanuel Adebayor

Good movement and skill as the Togolese forward looked to link Spurs' attacking play with his back to goal. Never had a real chance to score and his passing was sometimes wayward.

Substitutions

  • Mousa Dembélé

    Mousa Dembélé

Added creativity in midfield after coming on for Parker in the 64th minute.

    Jermain Defoe

Provided an extra man in attack after replacing Dempsey in the 73rd minute.

  • Simon Mignolet

    3.50

    Simon Mignolet

Showed why he was Sunderland's player of the season with some sharp saves to deny the likes of Bale and Adebayor. Sometimes looked a little shaky under high balls but his shot-stopping was excellent.

  • John O'Shea

    3.00

    John O'Shea

An impressive afternoon from Sunderland's captain. Used his experience to lead a backs-to-the-wall team performance.

  • Carlos Javier Cuéllar
    4
    1
    2.50

    Carlos Javier Cuéllar

A generally solid performance from the Spaniard as he stuck close to Adebayor, and took up good defensive positions. Lucky to get away with a blatant handball in the box in the second half.

  • Alfred N'diaye
    2
    1
    2.50

    Alfred N'diaye

Powerful presence in the Sunderland midfield as he helped to deny Spurs space and block their route to Mignolet's goal.

  • Sebastian Larsson
    4
    1
    2.00

    Sebastian Larsson

Looked uncomfortable out of position at right-back and was very fortunate not to concede a penalty for a clumsy challenge on Bale in the first half.

  • Jack Colback
    6
    0
    3.00

    Jack Colback

Another who played in an unusual position. Handled his role at left-back rather well against the pace and skill of Lennon and Bale.

  • David Vaughan

    5
    2.50

David Vaughan Flop of the Match

Tidy on the ball but was sent-off in the 75th minute for a second booking, a clumsy late challenge on Lennon.

  • Adam Johnson
    3

    2.00

    Adam Johnson

Did a good job tracking back defensively but the winger was wasteful in possession.

  • James McClean

    2
    2.50

    James McClean

The Irishman did well tracking back to support Colback, although he had few opportunities to cause Tottenham problems going the other way.

  • Danny Graham
    1
    2
    2.00

    Danny Graham

Kept making runs down the channels but looked badly lacking in confidence before being replaced by Mandron in the 74th minute.

  • Connor Wickham

    2.00

    Connor Wickham

Almost broke the deadlock in the 30th minute but saw his powerful close range shot saved by Lloris. Showed glimpses of his technical ability but his movement was poor.
