Alert at all times and made a good early save from Bale which helped his confidence after seeing eight fly past him against Chelsea. Had done well to keep Spurs out in the first half but was beaten four times in the second period.

    Joseph Bennett

Was keen to get forward when he could, wasn’t afraid to take on the Spurs players and offered a good solution down the left-hand-side. He handled the pace and power of Lennon well and got much closer to him in the second half, which frustrated the Spurs man.

    Nathan Baker

Struggled against Adebayor, was beaten in the air by the striker on a couple of occasions although was always on hand to challenge on the edge of the penalty area. He was replaced just before half-time by Stephen Ireland after picking up a knock defending a Spurs corner.

    Ashley Westwood

High on energy in the middle of the pitch but there were times when his eagerness to play a short pass let him down and he was lucky that Spurs didn’t punish his mistakes. Replaced by Albrighton at half-time.

    Fabian Delph

The midfielder loves a tackle and he wasn’t afraid to put himself about as he tried to keep the visitors at bay. He gave the Spurs midfield a bit too much space but that changed in the second half as he got himself much closer to Sandro and Dembele.

Worked hard in the centre of defence but struggled against the constant Spurs bombardment. The strength of Adebayor and pace of Defoe caused him problems but he was able to keep them at bay for the majority of the game.

Not tested in the first half as Villa only created two half chances which were both wasted. He was much busier in the opening minutes of the second half but he coped easily and enjoyed a very easy end to the game.

Back at centre half having been deployed at left-back recently, and he looked extremely comfortable alongside Gallas. He had a good battle with compatriot Benteke throughout, a duel that he generally came out on top in.

    William Gallas

A very easy game for the Frenchman who kept Benteke at arm’s length and dealt with any balls played in behind him well, using his experience to deny the Belgian any opportunities to test Lloris.

The Welshman was in fine form down the left-hand-side and was a constant thorn in the Aston Villa defence. He was unlucky not to have got his name on the scoresheet in the first period with two excellent chances that were both saved by Guzan although his luck soon changed with a fine second-half hat-trick with expertly taken chances from inside the penalty area.

    Sandro

Worked so well with Dembele and together they dominated against the three-man Villa midfield. He kept the ball moving at all times and pushed on when he could to support the front two.

Linked up well with Defoe and opened up the Villa defence on a couple of occasions but they were unable to punish the hosts. He had two good chances from Bale corners in the first half but his finishing lacked power and Guzan was able to save easily.

Played like he could smell goals and as his side controlled large parts of the game he had a couple of half chances to beat Guzan. He never got a clear sight of goal until just before the hour and he showed his finishing ability as he poked Naughton’s pass under Guzan to open the scoring.
