Philippines 2-2 Indonesia: Younghusband brothers combine to rescue draw for Azkals

Michael Weiss' men missed the chance to exert revenge on their 2010 AFF Cup semi-final defeat to the Merah Putih, as the siblings salvaged a share of the spoils for their country

Philippines failed to make amends for their AFF Cup defeat to Indonesia two years ago after both sides played out a 2-2 draw at Rizal Memorial Stadium on Tuesday.

The Azkals flew off the traps, threatening the Merah Putih in just the fourth minute through Emelio Caligdong, if not for centre-back Nopendi's vital block in the penalty area.

Indonesia, who played defensively throughout the entire first half, meant they struggled to develop their game in advanced areas of the pitch, allowing Philippines to build on their attacking intensity.

On 25 minutes, the hosts almost netted a deserved opener from Jason Sabio's cross, but the resulting header could only clip the crossbar.

The visitors called for a penalty kick in the latter stages of the half when Irfan Bachdim was tackled by Rob Gier, but the referee refused to award the spotkick.

In the second half, Philippines continued to press ahead with several opportunities, but surprisingly it was Indonesia who broke the deadlock in the match with a header from Patrich Wanggai on 57 minutes.

However, two minutes later, the Azkals netted an equaliser through James Younghusband, who took full advantage of Satrio Syam's error in the Merah Putih's backline.

Indonesia's sweeping counterattack in the 62nd minute resulted in them regaining their lead after Irfan Bachdim finished off Samsul Arif's through pass.

Sadly, the game was stopped momentarily after a quarrel between Irfan and Philippines' players with just 10 minutes left. Consequently, the referee showed red cards to Bachdim, Caligdong and Ott for their participation in the incident.

But moments later, Phillip Younghusband succeeded in raising the cheers of Azkals fans after he restored parity only three minutes later.

The result now means Philippines have further extended their winless run against Indonesia, which has been in place since 1958.
