Goal was on hand to cast a critical eye over events at Santiago Bernabeu, as los Rojiblancos edged an absolute thriller in extra-time after Ronaldo saw red

    Diego López Rodríguez

Could not be blamed for either goal, but will be frustrated at the first, given that he made slight contact with Diago Costa's well struck shot.

  • Raúl Albiol

    Raúl Albiol

Caught too far upfield when Radamel Falcao bypassed him near the halfway line to release Diego Costa for the equaliser – in exactly the position he should have been to intercept. Sometimes struggled to keep tabs on the effervescent Colombian throughout.

  • Fabio Coentrao

    3.00

    Fabio Coentrao

Fared well enough when faced with the threat of the unpredictable Koke, and was his usual solid self in the offensive third, linking well with Mesut Ozil on occasion and providing a good outlet on the left. Subbed off in extra time, with Alvaro Arbeloa replacing him.

  • Sergio Ramos

    Sergio Ramos

Broke down a very promising attack for the hosts with a superfluous flick that gifted possession right back to Atletico. Had occasional trouble dealing with the threat of Radamel Falcao and Diego Costa initially, but steadied himself admirably to make a series of key defensive plays.

  • Luka Modric

    Luka Modric

The Croatian was intermittently effective, spending long periods on the periphery of the game, but looked occasionally capable of providing a moment of supreme creativity and was a tireless worker in the middle.

  • Michael Essien

    Michael Essien

Though he showed a lot of willingness to motor down the right flank and support the attack, his deliveries from wide areas left something to be desired. Also left trailing in Diego Costa’s wake when the forward sprinted in for the equaliser.

  • Mesut Özil
    10
    16
    2.50

    Mesut Özil

Provided the assist for Cristiano Ronaldo’s opening goal with a well-flighted corner right over the penalty spot. But he must have been wondering how he did not score himself, as he sent a snap shot off the post, and was twice denied from point-blank range by Juanfran and Thibaut Courtois.

  • Sami Khedira

    Sami Khedira

The German midfielder left it all out on the pitch in a tireless showing, but he was guilty of not restraining himself at times, committing a few clumsy challenges in the middle of the park.

  • Xabi Alonso

    17
    2.50

    Xabi Alonso

The former Liverpool man was not able to dictate proceedings from deep in his usual manner and was a bit more defensive than usual, which also did not appear a good fit as he was often lethargic off the ball.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo Flop of the Match

Showcased his impressive aerial ability to leap above Diego Godin and head home the opener, and came close to a second with a clever low free-kick that rolled under the wall and hit the post. However, his petulant side, simmering throughout the match, boiled over with an immature reaction against Gabi that led to his dismissal.

  • Karim Benzema
    14
    10
    2.50

    Karim Benzema

Wafted in and out of the game for the most part, but came within an inch of sending his side into the lead with a close-range shot that smacked squarely off the post. Subbed off at the end of 90 minutes for Gonzalo Higuain.

Decent enough on the flanks after replacing Fabio Coentrao for extra time.

    Ángel Di María

Showed one or two flashes, but there was not enough time for him to get in his stride.

  • Gonzalo Higuaín

    Gonzalo Higuaín

Missed a golden chance when attacking a loose ball inside the area, and fired right at the keeper when he should have scored.

  • Thibaut Courtois

Thibaut Courtois Top of the Match

The Belgian keeper was otherworldly in extra-time, keeping the hosts at bay just when his side were ready to crack. A point-blank save on Gonzalo Higuain and a world-class tip from Mesut Ozil's goalbound shot saved his side late on. By the looks of it, Chelsea have absolutely nothing to worry about from their No. 1 spot for years to come.

  • Diego Godín
    12
    2
    3.50

    Diego Godín

The Uruguay international was little more than a passenger when Cristiano Ronaldo sailed through the air to head home the opener. But that was the lone blot on an otherwise accomplished defensive copybook, where he shut out Madrid time and time again.

  • Filipe Luis
    14
    2
    3.50

    Filipe Luis

The left-back generally did a solid job of restricting play on his side of the pitch, and found the occasional opportunity to get forward, such as one second-half sequence where he rippled the side netting with a volley from Gabi’s long pass.

  • Juanfran
    14
    2
    3.50

    Juanfran

Everyone in the red half of the Spanish capital will be talking about that block. Mesut Ozil seemed destined to score from a rebound with an unguarded net in front of him, but the full-back threw his body into the path of the ball to keep his team level in dramatic fashion.

  • Miranda
    19
    2
    4.50

    Miranda

Even more assured than Diego Godin at the back, and with one towering header in extra time, struck the all-important winner to give Atletico the trophy and end 14 years of hurt against their city rivals.

  • Arda Turan
    12
    1
    3.00

    Arda Turan

The Turkish midfielder was sporadic for the hosts, struggling to get the ball in his preferred areas, but when he did, was very effective in creating chances for his side.

  • Gabi
    12
    2
    3.50

    Gabi

His passing was key today, as he kept play ticking in midfield, and produced a few searching long balls to spark his side on the counter. He will probably win bonus points among his fans for his part in Cristiano Ronaldo's dismissal, although it appeared that he made the most of the Portuguese's bad reaction.

  • Koke
    12
    2
    3.00

    Koke

He was presented with a number of promising positions to cause danger with his deliveries from set pieces and open play in the first half, but proceeded to waste almost every single one, much to the growing frustration of Diego Simeone on the sidelines. However, he finally found his accuracy in extra-time with a pinpont cross onto the head of Miranda for the winner.

  • Mario Suárez

    1

    Mario Suárez

An all-action game in the centre of the park. He did what his team needed him to do - holding onto possession or getting back to protect the defence.

  • Diego Costa
    19
    4
    4.00

    Diego Costa

The Brazilian has gained a bit of a reputation for his short fuse, but today, he let his football do the talking. His equalising goal was a thing of beauty, latching onto Radamel Falcao’s pass, blazing past two players, and angling a superb finish into the bottom corner. His dark side did emerge in the second half though, with a late challenge on Luka Modric that earned him a booking.

  • Radamel Falcao
    24
    2
    3.50

    Radamel Falcao

The Colombian striker showed that he is just as capable of setting up goals as he is scoring them, by shaking off two challenges in midfield and releasing Diego Lopez with a perfect through pass for the equaliser. His ability to hold up the ball and link with his teammates was key to Atletico’s fortunes throughout.
