Goal.com evaluates the performances of everyone involved in Geneva, where Daniele De Rossi and Mario Balotelli cancelled out first-half goals from Fred and Oscar

By Mark Doyle

    Gianluigi Buffon

The captain made a fine stop to deny Neymar early on but was given no chance by either Fred or Oscar. Did not actually have too much to do in a second period that Italy bossed, but he was equal to everything that Brazil did throw at him.

  • Andrea Barzagli
    0

    3.50

    Andrea Barzagli

On hand to snuff out the danger just as Oscar was threatening to surge clear, Barzagli was calmness personified throughout.

  • Leonardo Bonucci

    0
    3.50

    Leonardo Bonucci

The Juventus man failed to get enough purchase on his header in the lead-up to Fred's goal, and also struggled occasionally with Neymar's pace. However, he was strong in the tackle and, for the most part, dominant in the area.

  • Mattia De Sciglio

    3.50

    Mattia De Sciglio

Not exactly a dream debut for the youngster, who was caught horribly out of position for both Brazil goals, even gifting the ball to Neymar for the second. To his credit, showed impressive mental strength in putting a dreadful first half behind him to perform impressively after the interval.

  • Andrea Pirlo
    0
    0
    2.50

    Andrea Pirlo

The best player on the pitch in the first half. Did as he pleased, as exemplified by the way in which he shrugged off a challenge in midfield before putting Maggio in on goal with a stunning 40-yard pass. However, he was taken off the break (hence the low mark), presumably with next week's qualifier in mind.

  • Christian Maggio
    0
    0
    3.50

    Christian Maggio

A fine outlet down the right-hand side for the Azzurri, the Napoli man very nearly scored after instantly controlling a long ball from Pirlo but he did not get enough on the ball and his shot was easily saved by Julio Cesar.

  • Daniele De Rossi
    0
    0
    3.50

    Daniele De Rossi

Industrious as ever, De Rossi did a fine job disrupting any sense of Brazil had in midfield before then dragging the Azzurri back into the game with a sublime flick shortly after half-time.

  • Riccardo Montolivo
    0
    0
    3.50

    Riccardo Montolivo

A last-minute addition to the starting line-up following claudio Marchisio's withdrawal, the Milan midfielder distributed the ball well and played his part in Italy's dominance in the middle of the park.

  • Emanuele Giaccherini
    0
    0
    3.00

    Emanuele Giaccherini

Started extremely brightly, cutting inside David Luiz before being denied by Julio Cesar. However, his influence waned the longer the game went on.

  • Mario Balotelli

Mario Balotelli Top of the Match

Probably should have opened the scoring after his run off the shoulder off Luiz was picked out by De Rossi, but his low drive was kept out by the legs of Julio Cesar. Tested the QPR keeper again before eventually beating his Brazilian adversary with a stunning curler. Could have won it, too, but volleyed straight at his nemesis.

  • Pablo Daniel Osvaldo
    0
    0
    2.50

    Pablo Daniel Osvaldo

Did not lack confidence, as evidenced by his incredibly ambitious attempted chip from the edge of the area 15 minutes in. Went much closer with an awkward header from a Balotelli cross but was on the periphery of the game for the most part and was unsurprisingly withdrawn at the break.

Substitutions

  • Luca Antonelli

    Luca Antonelli

The Genoa man came on for De Sciglio with 17 minutes remaining.

  • Alessio Cerci

    Alessio Cerci

Thrown on in place of Pirlo during the break and played with impressive confidence and dynamism, causing all sorts of problems for Brazil down their left-hand side.

  • Andrea Poli

    3.00

    Andrea Poli

Came on for Giaccherini midway through the second half and performed well.

  • Alessandro Diamanti

    Alessandro Diamanti

Replaced De Rossi with 10 minutes left but was unable to work his usual magic.

  • Alberto Gilardino
    0

    Alberto Gilardino

Took over up top from Balotelli with eight minutes to go but did not make much of an impression.

  • Stephan El Shaarawy

    3.00

    Stephan El Shaarawy

Introduced during the interval and immediately looked far livelier than Osvaldo, forcing Julio Cesar into a save before setting up De Rossi for Italy's opener by whipping over the resulting corner. Very nearly won it for Italy, too, but whipped a shot just wide.

  • Julio César
    0
    0
    3.50

    Julio César

A contender for man of the match, Julio Cesar made a string of crucial stops. Indeed, had it not been for the QPR man, Brazil would undoubtedly have lost this game.

  • Daniel Alves
    0
    1
    2.50

    Daniel Alves

Showed impressive strength in barging Balotelli off the ball in the opening quarter, setting the tone for a typically barnstorming display. However, he was caught out a couple of times with balls in between himself and David Luiz.

  • Dante
    0
    0
    3.00

    Dante

The Bayern Munich man was Brazil's best defender, with his positioning far sounder than the man he was playing alongside.

  • David Luiz
    0
    0
    2.00

    David Luiz

The captain was twice caught out by routine balls over the top inside the opening six minutes, as he struggled terribly with the movement of Italy's attackers, though he did get better the longer the game wore on.

  • Filipe Luis
    0
    0
    2.50

    Filipe Luis

One fine break down the left wing early on led to Neymar testing Buffon and he created the game's opening goal with a cross that dropped for Fred via the head of Bonucci. However, Maggio did cause him problems from a defensive perspective.

  • Fernando
    0
    0
    3.00

    Fernando

Wasn't too far away with a long-range free kick in the opening quarter but his prime objective was protecting his back four, which, after a ropey opening quarter, he did reasonably well.

  • Hernanes
    0
    0
    2.50

    Hernanes

Had a tame effort on goal during the opening exchanges but his passing was far more impressive, the Lazio man regularly switching the play with measured cross-field passes. However, was nowhere near as influential as he would have hoped against the country in which he currently plies his trade.

  • Oscar
    0
    0
    3.50

    Oscar

His ridiculously quick feet had already earned him numerous free kicks before he doubled Brazil's advantage with a tremendously composed finish shortly before the interval. Did not shine as brightly in the second period, making his premature exit somewhat inevitable.

  • Fred
    0
    0
    3.50

    Fred

Was always looking to link up with Neymar and put the Selecao with ahead with a sumptuously controlled volley. Did not get another clear sight of goal, but never lost his goalscoring threat.

  • Hulk
    0
    0
    3.00

    Hulk

Offered decent width at times but was the least impressive of Brazil's front three, as his shooting was wayward and his final ball poor.

  • Neymar
    0
    0
    3.00

    Neymar

Fired an early warning shot by drawing a smart save out of Buffon after breezing by Bonucci four minutes in. It went unheeded, the Santos starlet creating a goal for Oscar after a blistering break from inside his own half. A constant menace but unable to get his name on the scoresheet.

Substitutions

  • Marcelo

    Marcelo

Given 15 minutes of action after taking over at full-back from Filipe Luis.

  • Luiz Gustavo

    Luiz Gustavo

Saw only a couple of minutes of action after replacing Hernanes in injury time.

  • Jean

    Jean

Did not have enough time to make an impression after coming on for Hulk with just five minutes left.

  • Diego Costa

Diego Costa Flop of the Match

Came on for Fred but did not get a chance to make his mark.

  • Kaká

    0
    2.00

    Kaká

Was given half an hour to shine but while he looked fresh, the Real Madrid reserve was unable to make anything happen.
