Top five Afcon final clashes
1982 (Libya) - Ghana beat Libya 7-6 on pens
The 1982 Afcon was the 13th edition of the competition and at that time, there were eight teams divided into two groups. The finalists, Ghana and Libya were both based in Group A. Both countries progressed but the hosts went through as group leaders. Prior to the tournament, the Black Stars almost missed out until President J.J Rawlings stepped in to endorse their participation. It was, however, surprising that they eventually made it to the final considering the inadequate preparations. It was that tournament that produced one of Africa’s best players, Abedi Pele was just 16. In the final, Ghana and Libya settled for another draw after the first meeting in the group ended 2-2. This time around, they played out a 1-1 draw with George Alhassan scoring again against the Libyans. Ghana went ahead to win the penalty shootouts 7-6 to win their fourth continental title. That was the last time the Black Stars won the title.
