KALUSHA BWALYA – ZAMBIA
Last year, Kalusha Bwalya as chairman of the Zambian FA got to savour just how it felt to be an African champion as he watched the Chris Katongo-led Chipolopolo claim glory, albeit merely in the form of vicarious satisfaction. In fact, Bwalya would be reminded of an earlier group of Zambian players, one far classier than the present and in which he played himself, but which met its fateful end over the waters of Gabon in 1993 before it could achieve any of the success it seemed set for. A year later, Bwalya, the sole ‘survivor’ of that ill-fated side, would lead a largely make-shift replacement outfit to a runners-up finish in Tunisia. Still, for the much accomplished Zambian legend that achievement would never suffice. Not quite.
