Top 5 African skippers who never won the Afcon
DIDIER DROGBA – IVORY COAST
In five editions, there has hardly been any side better-placed to win the Afcon than this ‘Golden Generation’ of Ivorian footballers, led by the reputable Didier Drogba. Yet the country has choked on various occasions, with the closest they have ever come occurring in 2006 and 2012 when they lost via penalties to Egypt and Zambia respectively in the final. The current tournament, supposedly the last hurrah for an ageing squad, represented their worst campaign yet and, for Drogba, a personal low, as he bowed out with a squeal, registering a single strike. For someone who has won a horde of laurels including English championships, domestic cups, and even the infinitely more prestigious Uefa Champions League, Drogba would still feel hard done by never to have conquered Africa before bringing an illustrious international career to an end - something he looks set to do anytime soon.
