WILSON ORUMA – Japan 1993
As Nigeria claimed a second world title at the Under-17 World Cup hosted by Japan in 1993 - beating neighbours Ghana 2-1 in the final - Oruma was the toast of both fans and scouts alike. Even among a golden class of Eaglets that included the likes of Celestine Babayaro and Nwankwo Kanu, the physically impressive Oruma, skipper of the side, stood out and duly capped a wonderful tournament with a top-scoring six strikes. Afterwards, he embarked on a sequence of transfers that saw him play for a number of Swiss and French clubs yet never quite blossoming into the top quality material he seemed built to be. For Nigeria, however, Oruma saw some success, notably the memorable triumph at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and retaining a place in the team until well into the 2000s. Still, those who witnessed his bright beginnings would argue that he certainly seemed capable of greater things.
