Africa’s Top 5 winners in 2012
ZAMBIA NATIONAL TEAM
Few of their countrymen sincerely believed they would have gone on to win the Africa Cup of Nations when the Zambian national side emplaned for Equatorial Guinea/Gabon 2012 back in January, even though many might claim on hindsight that they probably envisioned something of the sort. Granted, Herve Renard's charges statistically had a one-in-sixteen chance of landing a first continental success, yet in reality, the likelihood was far less, considering that they were only distant favorites for the title. However, six inspired performances later, the Chipolopolo succeeded in overturning the odds heavily stuck against them to become champions of Africa, and claiming some huge scalps along the way. Goals from Emmanuel Mayuka, some influential play from skipper Chris Katongo, and resilient defending by the likes of Stoppila Sunzu, aided by a considerable dose of good fortune culminated in an incredible 8-7 marathon shoot-out victory over Didier Drogba and his fellow Elephants, sending Lusaka and its environs into rapturous scenes. A deserved reward for daring to dream.
