Mensah tips Ghana for Afcon semi-finals

Ghana defender Jonathan Mensah is confident in their chances against DR Congo in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Black Stars will face the Leopards at Stade d'Oyem on Sunday, following a 1-0 defeat to Egypt in their last group game on Wednesday.

Avram Grant's men had already secured qualification to the last eight before matchday three, having earlier recorded separate 1-0 wins over Uganda and Mali.

“The most important thing was to qualify [to the quarter-finals], Mensah told Class FM.

"We didn’t want this result [defeat to Egypt], but that is what transpired.

"We are through to the knockout stage of the competition, which was our minimum target coming to Gabon.

"We have seen the Congolese and they are a very good side.

"They won two of their games and drew against the Ivorians, so we are definitely in for a tough game.

"But I’m confident in the abilities of my colleagues, and I know whoever is selected for the game will give his all on Sunday."

Ghana are seeking to win the continental title after 35 years.

The Black Stars last won the title in 1982, having claimed it three times prior.

The team has since 1982 finished as runners-up on three occasions - 1992, 2010 and 2015.
