I’m going to Euro 2016 to win it – Digne

Lucas Digne was delighted to be named in Didier Deschamps’ squad for Euro 2016 and is targeting a third European title for France.

Digne will vie for the left-back spot with experienced Juventus defender Patrice Evra. He is, however, focused on the squad and believes that expectations are high ahead of the tournament on home turf.

“I’m going to the Euros to win it,” he told Goal. “I can only speak for myself, of course, but I go into every game to win it - as I think all footballers do. We place great expectations on ourselves just like the French people have.

“It is a boyhood dream to be a part of Les Bleus playing such a big tournament in our own country.”

The 22-year-old has paid tribute to his Roma team for helping him into the squad, with his club’s season climaxing in a terrific 3-1 over Milan at San Siro on Sunday.

“I am really happy to be in the France squad,” he said. “I am proud to play for my country, and it is the perfect climax to what has been a truly fantastic season for my team Roma and I.

“We have hit an amazingly high level and a super streak of 17 games without losing - that’s almost half a season! Our confidence in ourselves as a team has only been growing. I have a feel like family with the guys in the squad and the staff around us.”

While he would not be drawn on his future, save reiterating his desire to stay with Roma, Digne did comment that he was pleased with his decision to move to Serie A on loan a year ago.

“It was the perfect choice for me to go here last summer and play regularly for a top club in a top league. With this group we could go far next season and challenge for the Scudetto,” he said.
