Ashanti Gold players facing betting charges, says Fianoo

Ashanti Gold chief executive officer Kudjo Fianoo has revealed that some first team players have been charged by their disciplinary committee in relation to breaches of betting rules.

Fianoo, who doubles as Ghana League Clubs Association chairman, also revealed that a betting company approached him this season to manipulate one of their matches and despite alerting the football association's president Kwesi Nyantakyi, nothing was done about it.

"A betting company approached me in the past of which I informed Ghana FA president Kwesi Nyantakyi to involve the Criminal and Investigations Department of the Police in a meeting they wanted me to attend but he turned a deaf ear to it," Fianoo told Nhyira FM.

"The betting syndicates are gradually taking over football here in Ghana and something must be done to curb it. Some players of my club (Ashanti Gold) are allegedly involved in this betting and manipulation of matches and we are investigating them. We will surely get to the bottom of the issue and whether they are guilty or not but frankly speaking, these allegations are not just coincidental as some people want us to believe," he added.

Ashanti Gold, who won the league title two seasons ago, are battling relegation this time around and need a victory on final day against Aduana Stars to survive the scares.
