The Espanyol player says it will be an honour to return home with the individual diadem since Ghana lost out on the ultimate
The Espanyol player has four goals in his name at the ongoing biggest football fiesta of Africa in South Africa and could earn the award since his main contender Nigeria’s Emmanuel Emenike is a doubt for the final.
The Black Stars will play in the third and fourth-place play-off with Mali on Saturday and Wakaso, who is making his debut appearance at the tournament, could grab the prize if he adds to his tally.
“It’s very important for me to get something for the nation,” the set piece expert said at a pre-match press conference. “Not for myself [but] for the nation and my colleagues. We really need something to go back home with”
“We can’t go like that. It means by getting the Golden Boot. I am expecting it and to get the third-place too is also very important.
“I am trying to get it [Golden Boot] because I am thinking about my colleagues and what we wanted to achieve but we couldn’t get it. I am trying to lift them up and they are also trying to help me to get it.”
The last time a Ghanaian won the goal king award at the Afcon was in 1982 in the person of George Alhassan.
