Manchester United has opened up to commercialising its live broadcast rights via pay-per-view by announcing that it will live stream its pre-season friendly against Swedish Allsvenskan club AIK Fotboll via its official website.

The initiative marks the first time the English Premier League champion has embarked on such a distribution method, with the game set to take place in Stockholm on August 6. The game will be available to view via television, mobile, tablet, desktop or any other internet accessible device for a one-off fee of £5.95.

United said the club’s website will be the only place in the world where fans can see the match live online. Fans wishing to subscribe to the game must register their details and pay the one-off fee, with a 25% discount available up to August 4.

The service will be available in all markets with the exception of Thailand, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait and Turkey.
