The centre-back is confident in Atletico Madrid and believes his new club are capable of replicating their recent success in Europe this season

Martin Demichelis has revealed that the allure of Champions League football drove him to join Atletico Madrid and he believes that his new club is capable of challenging in Europe.

The club have enjoyed great success on the continental stage in recent seasons - winning the Europa League twice in the last four campaigns - though Champions League glory has always eluded them.

The Argentine, 32, arrived at the Vicente Calderon on a free transfer from Malaga and is excited for the new challenges that await him.

"I am happy to come to an important and ambitious club like Atletico, who will compete in La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League," he told reporters.

"For any player it is always special to play the Champions League. I’m convinced that we will make a great European impact.

"I am one of the older and experienced players. I will try to contribute and give all that I have. I want to achieve with the club what has been achieved in recent years."

Demichelis believes the Los Rojiblancos' winning mentality will take them far in the upcoming campaign under head coach Diego Simeone.

He added: "We have a trainer who shows his passion for winning daily, so I want to be able to rise to the occasion. I agree 100 per cent with the club and hope to achieve success by working hard.

"I want to have a very great season with no injuries. After that it’s anybody’s guess as to how this year will go. I have a lot of confidence though. [Diego] Godin and Miranda hold the central defence spots, but I will compete with everything that I have for a spot in the back-line.

"[Joining Atletico] was a difficult decision after 10 years in Europe. I had an option to join River Plate and an emotional choice regarding Malaga, having played two and a half very intense seasons with them. In the end, I decided for my career to take me to a great team like Atletico."

Michelis was confirmed as an Atletico player on Thursday on a one-year deal on the back of the club's swoop for Spain international David Villa.
