Christian Atsu ruled out of Ghana – Sudan World Cup qualifying clash

The FC Porto winger suffered an ankle sprain over the weekend and cannot make it to Ghana to honour the World Cup qualifying tie with the Falcons of Jediane
Ghana midfielder Christian Atsu has been ruled out of the 2014 World Cup qualifying game against Sudan.

The FC Porto winger got his ankle cricked on Sunday evening in a game against Maritimo with just 10 minutes into the game.

Atsu, who is part of coach Kwesi Appiah’s 24-man squad for the March 24 qualifier, needs more time to nurse his injury hence will not be available for the weekend game.

“Well, I can confirm that Atsu is not going to play,” the spokesperson of the Ghana FA Ibrahim Saanie Daara told Ghana.

“So you see there was wisdom in calling 24 players by Kwesi Appiah. I have not been told of any plans to replace him, but that will be difficult because the rules state that we would have to inform clubs three weeks in advance before players can be released.”

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah said in a statement: “We have spoken to FC Porto doctors and it is impossible for Atsu to recover in time for the game against Sudan. So officially, Atsu is out of the game.

“We wish him speedy recovery and will continue to monitor his progress.”
