The 30-year-old has played as a right-back in Real Madrid’s victories over Real Sociedad and Celta Vigo in the La Liga and Copa Del Rey respectively.
The on-loan Chelsea player was deployed in defence because Madrid had only one fit wing back, Alvaro Arbeloa.
Arbeloa was moved from his favourite right-back to left-back while Essien settled for the right-back position.
But the return of Coentrao and Marcelo means Madrid have three natural wing backs in the team.
Essien who has been named in the 20-man squad to face Osasuna on Saturday night will now play in his usual midfield position.
