Kwesi Appiah favours Awal Mohammed over Asante Kotoko’s Rashid Sumaila

Sources close to the team hint the local player could be allowed to still be with the team throughout the 2013 Afcon in order to deal with the shock associated with such news
The fate of Asante Kotoko’s defender Rashid Sumaila hangs in the balance as Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah presents his final 23-man squad for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations soon.

Sources close to the coach in Abu Dhabi, where the Black Stars are holding a pre-tournament camping, have hinted Ghana the centre-back could not vie for the last slot with Awal Mohammed.

“Rashid Sumaila will also be dropped from the squad but he might be with the team during the tournament in South Africa,” an official told Ghana.

According to the source, the Maritzburg guardsman gained the nod over his team-mate due to his “ability to play in all the defensive departments and also play as a holding midfielder.”

Signals being picked by Ghana indicate the 20-year-old could be allowed to be with the four-time African champions in order to reduce the shock that comes with news of such nature.

Ghana have been paired in Group B with Niger, DR Congo and Mali.
