The GFA is insisting the Stade Velodrome side release the winger for their doctors to also assess his condition in Abu Dhabi to decide his fate for 2013 Afcon

The Ghana Football Association has asked French side Olympique Marseille to release injured Andre Ayew to join the Black Stars in Abu Dhabi for further examination and treatment.

According to the French Ligue 1 side, the left-footed player sustained a hamstring injury in training on Wednesday.

Marseille medical officials say they will have to observe the player for the next five days before deciding if he could be available for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

The Stade Velodrome side has notified the Ghana FA about the condition of the midfielder, but the GFA in a statement insists Ayew must report to the team’s training base in Abu Dhabi for their doctors to also assess him.

“We have sent a message to Andre wishing him a speedy recovery,” the FA statement said. “As the Black Stars will start camping for the Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday, the stipulated FIFA deadline for the release of players for the tournament, the GFA has asked Marseille to release the player for examination by the Ghana medical team.”

“The GFA will provide Ayew with the best medical care in Abu Dhabi to ensure his speedy recovery,” the statement added.

Ghana’s 25-man contingent leaves for the Gulf Region on Friday to start an 11-day pre-tournament camping before going to South Africa. The Black Stars play DR Congo on January 20 in their first game of the 2013 Afcon.
