The 24-year-old defender has shot down reports making rounds that his vehicle was involved in a motor crash because he was intoxicatedGhana defender Jerry Akaminko has rubbished reports that he was drink-driving when his vehicle got involved in an accident on Friday in Koforidua en-route to Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
Ghanasoccernet had reported the Turkey-based guardsman was involved in an accident under the influence of alcohol.
The network went ahead to say the 24-year-old had his vehicle over-loaded with four girls and two men (including him) and stands a high chance of facing legal prosecution.
The report added that Akaminko resorted to throwing money around to bury the case since he is a public figure.
But the Eskishehirspor defender has reacted to the story by claiming he does not taste liquor.
“I was not drunk in the first place, I am not even a fan of alcohol,” Akaminko told the GNA’s Veronica Commey.
“Accidents do happen everywhere and the Police who attended to the situation understood that perfectly well.”
“They did not even charge me with any offence and as I speak, I am doing very well and spending time with my family in Kumasi, presently,” the defender, who is part of Ghana’s provisional 26-man squad for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, said. He added he left the accident scene unscathed.
He added: “It happened on the Koforidua road and I do not like to recount it because it gives me flashbacks that I do not enjoy.
“I was traveling with my family to Kumasi and on reaching a place called barrier, it just happened.”
He claimed “it is laughable” to hear he was supposedly under the influence of alcohol.
“Why will I do that, put myself and my family at risk just like that? I am a responsible person and I know better.”
Quizzed whether he was mandated to report to the Police at a later date, Akaminko answered in the negative; claiming “nothing of that was asked of me. Everything was settled well only within a few minutes after the accident.”
The former Heart of Lions skipper will be hoping to make the final cut for the Afcon in South Africa. He will be part of the team that will leave for Abu Dhabi next week for the pre-tournament camping.
