Five Ghanaian players lend fate in UCL round of 16 draw

Essien and Muntari especially know their respective fixtures in the UCL are very tough as five Ghanaian players prepare to fly the flag of Ghana aloft.

Five Ghanaian players will be involved in the round of 16 of the Uefa champions league after the draw was held in Nyon on Thursday morning.

Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari, Kevin Prince Boateng, Christian Atsu and Kwadwo Asamoah will all be engaged at this stage of the competition.

Essien’s Real Madrid have been paired with Manchester United while Christian Atsu who plays for FC Porto will be gearing up for a clash with Malaga.

Muntari and Kevin Prince Boateng will play against Barcelona again after AC Milan were paired with the Spanish giants.

Kwadwo Asamoah’s Juventus have a date with Celtic.

The first leg will be played on February 12/13 and 19/20.

Apart from Essien and Muntari, none of the above five has ever played in the final of the champions league let alone to lift the trophy.

Essien won it with Chelsea last season while Muntari did so with Inter Milan in 2010.

In general, five Ghanaian players have won the champions league including Abedi Pele (Olympic Marseille), Ibrahim Tanko (Borussia Dortmund) and Samuel Osei Kuffuor (Bayern Munich).
