The president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, has on behalf of the football community expressed deepest sympathy following the death of former Ghana vice-president, Alhaji Aliu Mahama.
Alhaji Mahama died on Friday, November 16, 2012 at the age of 66 at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
He served as a board member of Ghana Premier League side, Real Tamale United.
"We are deeply saddened to learn of the loss of H.E. Alhaji Aliu Mahama," Nyantakyi said in a statement.
"Alhaji Aliu Mahama was a football person with one of Ghana's traditional clubs, Real Tamale United where he was a member of the Board of Directors. He will also be fondly remembered for his generous gesture of fair play, humility and discipline.”
He added: "He helped promote the sport during his time as a Director of Real Tamale United and when he was the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana.
"On behalf of the Ghana Football Association and the football family, I would like to express our deepest sympathy to the entire family, friends and associates.
"May Allah keep his soul and give his family courage and strength in this difficult time. We will honour his memory for his positive contribution to the sport."
