A founding member of Real Tamale United and Ghana’s former vice president Alhaji Aliu Mahama has passed away.
The 66-year-old died at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital at 9.45 am on Friday, an official statement said. He has been on life support at the west African country’s premier hospital for more than 10 days now.
Alhaji Mahama served under the John Agyekum Kufuor administration as vice president from 2001 to January 7, 2009.
Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has declared a state of national mourning. Alhaji Mahama will be buried on November 17, 2012 at the Osu Military Cemetery in Accra.
The calm and soft-spoken persona was a football loving person and was instrumental in founding the Ghana Premier League team, which is nicknamed - the Pride of the North. He was born on March 3, 1946 in Yendi in the Northern region of Ghana.
He becomes the second highest personality to have died in 2012 after the death of President John Evans Atta Mills on July 24.
