A former IMC chairman of Sekondi Eleven Wise, Twum Barima, has urged the government to honour past sporting heroes and also let them enjoy retirement benefits.

“Doctors, lawyers, journalists and other public servants enjoy retirement benefits so our sporting heroes should also be on the same line,” he told Accra-based Happy FM.

“It is very bad the way our sporting heroes are treated. I was there at Edward Acquah's funeral and despite him serving the nation well, he was not given a state burial, no government official was there.

“Infact, we did not get a Ghana flag to bury him with,” the member of the Ghana Football Associations’ Sponsorship and Marketing committee said.

According to Barima, it is about time the government honours the sporting heroes so us to encourage people to die for the nation in terms of sports as neglecting them is very bad.

“I will call on the government to rename the Essipong Sports Stadium the Edward Acquah Sports Stadium in his honour as he did a lot for the nation,” he added.
