The Tamale Boys have taken off on a good note as they hope to return to the Ghana Premier League next season
The competition is played with three groups of four in a single round robin format with the winners of each group making it through to the elite division. Zones 1 and 3 include Real Tamale United, Bazooka FC, Unity FC and Bofoakwa Tano (Zone 1) as well as Amidaus Professionals, Istanbul FC, Danbort FC and King Solomon (Zone 3).
Matches in Zone 2 have been suspended in order to allow for the replay of a league match between Eleven Wise and Tarkwa United. RTU, Unity FC and King Solomon got their tournaments off to a good start with wins against Bazooka, Bofoakwa and Danbort respectively whiles Amidaus and Istanbul shared the spoils.
RTU 2-1 Bazooka, Baba Yara Stadium
The Tamale Boys got their tournament off to a good start with a win which greatly boost their chances of returning to the Premier League, which they had been a part of for 33 years, after a year out. Aziz Yusif opened the scoring for the Pride of the North before Razak Patrick pegged them back. Salim Sakara, however, was on hand to give RTU the win.
Bofoakwa Tano 0-1 Unity FC, Bekwai Park
Bofoakwa are another team looking to seal a return to the domestic top flight, but they got off to a poor start after losing late on to Unity FC through an Isaac Neequaye strike in the 86th minute. Bofoakwa will feel hard done by as they failed to manage a point but will be looking to do better in the next game.
Amidaus Professionals 1-1 Istanbul, Gyandu Park
Giant killing Amidaus had to fight back from a goal down to keep up their hopes of making it into the big stage. The side which defeated league winners Asante Kotoko in a FA Cup match went behind to a Timothy Darbah goal before drawing level through Emmanuel Morgan. Neither side managed to gain full points and will be looking to improve in the subsequent games.
Danbort 0-1 King Solomon, Robert Mensah Stadium
King Solomon won their opening game against Danbort FC who are looking for a second successive promotion. Danbort hardly looked like trouble as a solitary Ishmael Obodai goal sealed a win for King Solomon who will also be looking to gain promotion into the Premier League.
The second round of matches are scheduled for Sunday, August 19 2012.
