De Boer: Sneijder’s Galatasaray move good for Netherlands
The Ajax boss believes the former Inter playmaker’s transfer to the Istanbul club is good news for the national side, but admits Turkey is not one of Europe's strongest divisions
Frank de Boer says Wesley Sneijder’s move to Galatasaray will improve the fortunes of the Netherlands.
The 28-year-old made the move from Inter this week after a contract dispute with the Nerazzurri led to him being frozen out of the Serie A side.
Sneijder had not featured since September and De Boer, who won 112 caps with Oranje, thinks that regular first team football will only improve his performances for the Netherlands.
“Oranje now has a player, as he was desperately needed,” De Boer told Voetbal International.
“For the Dutch national team, this is good news, Wesley will now play football weekly. They're still in the Champions League and it is a big club. Ultimately, Galatasaray is not a wrong club for Wesley.”
However, the former Barcelona defender did concede that he feels the Turkish Super Lig is not at the same level as the Bundesliga or the Premier League, countries he would have liked to have seen Sneijder move to.
“As a football fan, I’d have liked Wesley to have gone to England or Germany,” he added.
“Where football atmosphere and experience is concerned, you cannot play in a better country than Turkey, but in terms of skill level it is obviously not a top [league].”
