The eighth round of matches in Ligue 1 saw Lyon held by Lorient who remain unbeaten, but it's L'OM who stay top after drawing with rivals PSG

Round 8 Results

League Table

SAINT-ETIENNE 4 0 AS NANCY
Saint-Etienne produced a sublime first-half display to thrash Nancy 4-0 at Stade Geoffrey Guichard and push Jean Fernandez closer to the brink.

All four goals were scored in a frantic 20 minute period in the opening stages, with the Greens finally looking like a cohesive attacking unit.

Brandao opened the scoring after just nine minutes, before Romain Hamouma doubled the advantage, diverting the ball past Guy N'Dy Assembe.

The rot failed to stop, as two further goals, just four minutes later from Brandao, getting his second and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put Christophe Galtier's side 4-0 up midway through the first half.

Nancy failed to instigate a response in a turgid second half, with Simon Zenke shown a straight red card with 20-odd minutes to go.

MONTPELLIER 2 3 EVIAN
Champions Montpellier suffered a fourth Ligue 1 defeat, going down 3-2 to a resurgent Evian side at a shocked Stade de la Mosson.

Saber Khlifa put the visitors ahead with a well-taken finish, before a Montpellier turnaround saw Marco Estrada score in the 36th minute, before Souleymane Camara continued his fine scoring form, handing Rene Girard's side the lead six minutes later.

However, Evian were threatening, and subsequently moved into the ascendancy in a dominating second half for Pascal Dupraz's men.

Khlifa equalised just after the half-hour mark, before netting a hat-trick with a minute to go and send the visiting Savoie fans into delirium.

SOCHAUX 0 1 RENNES
Sochaux plunged back into the relegation zone, with Rennes securing their third Ligue 1 win of the season at Stade Bonal.

Frederic Antoinetti's side featured Yann M'Vila for the first time in three weeks, with the young France international being dropped for the last two encounters.

The visitors raced out of the blocks early, with the game-winning goal surprisingly being scored in the seventh minute, with Mevlut Erding diverting the ball past Simon Pouplin.

Les Lionceaux were able to test the opposition's resolve on a number of occasions, but failed to adequately provide a goal threat as Rennes held on to claim all three points.

LOSC LILLE METROPOLE
2 0 AC AJACCIO
Lille secured their first league win at the Grand Stade Lille Metropole with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Ajaccio.

Les Dogues had previously been on a poor run of form, having not won since matchday one, whilst also losing 2-0 to Valencia in midweek.

An assured start from Rudi Garcia's side though highlighted their strength over a disappointing Corsican outfit in northern France.

Nolan Roux broke the deadlock just before half-time with a simple finish before new-boy Ryan Mendes bagged his first club goal to hand the hosts a much-deserved, and much-anticipated victory.

SC BASTIA
3 2 ESTAC TROYES
In a game of two promoted teams, SC Bastia seized the initiative with a fine 3-2 victory over nine-man Troyes in a frenetic encounter at Stade Armand Cesari.

An own goal put the Corsican side in front, with Rincon unwittingly deflecting the ball into his own net, before Brazilian striker Marcos restored parity on 26 minutes.

Former Blackburn striker Anthony Modeste regained Bastia's advantage, though the side would then concede a penalty - which Marcos duly converted just after half-time.

However, Troyes - who had failed to win a game as of yet in Ligue 1, self-imploded, despite being the better side. Firstly, Fabrice N'Sakala picked up a second yellow card, before Thiago Xavier was shown a straight red card by the referee.

With the numerical advantage telling, up stepped Toifilou Maoulida to bag the winner two minutes from time, and keep the opposition rooted to the bottom.

STADE DE REIMS 3 1 OGC NICE
Stade de Reims' unexpected start to the Ligue 1 season continued, scoring twice late on to seize a 3-1 victory over Nice.

The hosts broke the deadlock, perhaps against the run of play with Diego bagging his second league goal of the season. Nice would subsequently equalise, after sustained pressure in the second half, with Argentine-Croatian striker Dario Cvitanich levelling.

However, Herbert Fournier's side kept up the initiative, and were duly rewarded with time ticking. Gael Courtet fired twice, with three minutes to go and end Nice's resistance.
TOULOUSE
2 2 VALENCIENNES
Toulouse's resolve was once again tested, but once more they showed brilliant character to draw 2-2 against Valenciennes in an entertaining fixture at Stadium Municipal.

Daniel Sanchez's men were on a high, after thrashing league leaders Marseille 4-1 last weekend, and went ahead with two quick-fire goals from Foued Kadir and midfielder Carlos Sanchez.

The hosts' determination never wavered, with Wissam Ben Yedder reducing the deficit just after the second half resumed.

At the death, Adrien Regattin grabbed the all-important equaliser, capitalising on a fine piece of attacking play to steal a point.
STADE BREST
1 1 BORDEAUX
Bordeaux's unbeaten start to the season was prolonged once more, but they were frustrated against a very resolute Brest side on Sunday afternoon.

The visitors were on the back of a poor 3-0 defeat away to Newcastle United in the Europa League, and needed a victory to keep in touch with the leaders.

However, it would be the hosts who took the lead, with Jaroslav Plasil's slip inadvertently allowing Brest to break, as Eden Ben Basat swept past Cedric Carrasso with a powerful finish.

Francis Gillot's men equalised, and in style as Benoit Tremoulinas' pin-point cross was converted by Cheikh Diabate.

Goalkeeper Alexis Thebaux kept Brest in the game late on, with Yann Gouffran's drive being well saved, before Paul Baysse hit the bar late on.

FC LORIENT
1 1 OLYMPIQUE LYONNAIS

Olympique Lyonnais remained in third place, missing the chance to move above Paris Saint-Germain, as a brilliant Lorient side earned a point in a fantastic game in Brittany.

Remi Garde's men had been involved in an astonishing 4-3 Europa League win over Hapoel Ironi Kiryat Shmona in midweek, but there was no such lethargic defensive display here as Bafetimbi Gomis scored a wonderful volley to open the scoring.

The hosts were denied by the post, straight after that goal, but they found the net just after the re-start, as Benjamin Corgnet's lovely one-two with Alain Traore was later converted in by Jeremie Aliadiere.

Both goalkeepers had to save countless shots towards the end, in what became an open flowing encounter, but at full-time, it finished 1-1.
