Ghana Player of the Week: Christian Atsu - Black Stars

Ghana Player of the Week
AGE 20
POSITION Midfielder
FOR Black Stars
2-0 Malawi

The midfielder was the toast of the fans at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday after a man-of-the-match performance in the first leg of the 2013 Afcon qualifier against the Flames of Malawi. The 20-year-old scored the first goal in the 2-0 victory and was a constant threat in the goal area of the Malawians. The Porto player truly justified why he was given a starting role at home. His touches were delight to watch and had almost all his passes right. No wonder, most of the pundits in Ghana gave him a minimum mark of eight and maximum of nine during their ratings. Atsu has made only four appearances for the Black Stars and has scored two goals. His performance on Saturday was so impressive that his place in the starting eleven is now guaranteed.

Congratulations to Atsu,'s 2nd Ghana Player of the Week winner!

Honourable Mention

Isaac Vorsah – Black Stars

The new Red Bulls Salzburg signing would have easily swept away the man-of-the match award, but for the scintillating performance by Christian Atsu. The guardsman was calm at the rear and did not allow any ball to beat him. The former TSG Hoffenheim central defender was a real organiser in defense and did the tidying up well.

Anthony Annan - Black Stars

The Osasuna midfielder was another star performer in the Black Stars set up. He run tirelessly and did the very simple things as a defensive midfielder. Apart from shielding the defenders creditably, Annan scored the second goal which happens to be his only second in a Black Stars shirt.

Samuel Affum – FC Smouha

Afum continues to be a kingpin for the Egyptian side ever since joining them from Accra Hearts of Oak two seasons ago. In another pre-season match against Egyptian side Telephonaat Bani Suef on Friday, Afum was on target in the 1-1 draw in what was his 10th goal in his sixth pre-season match.

Each week our team of writers will put forward a selected candidate, as chosen by Ghana, who deserves recognition for achieving something special that matchday.

It won't necessarily be the best player in the country - at least not usually - but whoever we crown will have accomplished something amazing. It might be for a particularly awesome performance or for something praiseworthy off the pitch - either way, the person in question deserves special attention...
