Allegri: Staying at the top would be unrealistic

Allegri: Staying at the top would be unrealistic

Latest Berlusconi: Milan can top Serie A this season Previous

The AC Milan coach wants to see out his current deal at San Siro as he looks to rebuild after a summer that saw his squad decimated by departures

Massimiliano Allegri has told AC Milan fans that it would be unrealistic to expect his side to be challenging for the Scudetto this season.

The Rossoneri parted with a number of experienced players over the summer, including star duo Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva, and are currently 11th in Serie A, having lost five of their 11 games.

Goal.com exclusively revealed that the club's management had drawn up a list of candidates to replace the former Cagliari coach, but the 45-year-old is adamant that he will be staying.

"I won't reply to questions about my situation or the transfer market any more," he told reporters. "We got results in my first two years and it is unthinkable to be top this season after so many changes.

"I started this experience with enthusiasm and will keep it going until my contract expires in 2014, trying to get back to challenging for the best results.

"We can have a great campaign and we are still in the running on every front. We have played so many youngsters in the Champions League and it'll take time to win.

"We still haven't resolved our problems and are a long way from the top three. Right now, our aim is fourth, fifth or sixth place - then we'll see what the situation is.

"We've got to get back on our feet and go through to the Champions League knock-out rounds."

Milan play Fiorentina on Sunday at San Siro, and Allegri is expecting the Florentine outfit to put up a tough fight.

"Fiorentina are getting results and playing fairly well. They have technically gifted individuals and so like to keep possession," he said.

"This will be difficult like every other game, and it's one we have to win in order to climb up the table. We must play like a team who know what they want."

Milan and Fiorentina kick off at 15:00CET on Sunday.
