The German police have confirmed the incident and have opened an investigation into the assault case.
“Yes, that's true! On December 25th Boateng was attacked in the open street by an unknown man,” Goal Germany confirmed. “He is just slightly injured, but he has already brought charges against him, the German police confirms it.”
The German-born Ghanaian is reported to have suffered bruises to his ribs, back and neck and was treated at a local hospital, German broadcaster DW reported.
According to the Bild, Boateng was leaving the house of his ex-wife after visiting his young son at Christmas. It said the midfielder was struck once by the assailant and fell onto a vase as a result.
The 26-year-old could be physically and psychologically fit for Schalke as they prepare for their next Bundesliga game against Hamburger on January 25.
