Son eyeing World Cup 2014 South Korea berth
The striker has made playing in the tournament his number one goal and believes he can continue to improve over the next 18 months and become a national team regular
Hamburg’s South Korea international Heung-min Son is aiming to represent his country at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
The striker, 20, has scored nine goals in 20 Bundesliga matches this season and already has 12 caps for his country.
“The World Cup in Brazil is my main aim and my hope. I’ve still got a little over a year to keep improving in order to represent my country there,” Son told Fifa.com.
“The atmosphere at the ground, the weather and the way people breathe football is impressive. I’ll give everything to be able to play there.
“I’m still young and have a lot to learn. The coach decides when he thinks it’s right to play me.”
South Korea have yet to secure a place at the tournament and are currently second in their qualification group, one point behind Uzbekistan, with Son determined to ensure they qualify.
“The other countries have developed well in the last few years. Even if Lebanon or Uzbekistan are almost unheard of here in Europe, they're very good and we can’t take them for granted," he continued.
“We still have three home games to play and with our fans behind us we want to win every game. That’s why I’m confident and have the belief that we’ll get through in the end.”
