The Teranga Lions will be facing their West African arch-rivals without former captain Diouf whom many thought would make the list after his five-year ban was lifted last week
Senegal coach Joseph Koto has published his list of players to face Cote D’Ivoire in the return leg of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations final round qualifying slated for October 13 in Dakar.
Two-time African Footballer of the Year El Hadji Diouf, who joined Leeds United last August from Doncaster Rovers in the English Championship, did not make the list contrary to wide expectations.
The 31-year-old striker had his five-year suspension lifted by the Senegal football federation last week after a number of officials clamoured for his return to help the outfit knock out the Elephants, who carried off the first leg on a 4-2 score, which local pundits attributed to a better experience.
However, Koto says his priority is to build a future team by rejuvenating the set up, which explains his choice of calling up 13 players from the U23 team that participated in the 2012 London Olympic football tournament.
Former Fenerbahçe forward Issiar Dia was also left out. No reasons were given by the coach.
Senegal need to score two goals without conceding any to surmount the Ivorian hurdle and book a place for the South Africa 2013.
