Inspirational captains have never been rare to find in African football, and some of these have been among the most talented footballers to emerge from the continent. For many a skipper of an African team, there could be no glory - besides the Fifa World Cup - greater than lifting the coveted Afcon trophy. While quite a number have gone on to realise this dream such as Egypt’s Ahmed Hassan - even on multiple occasions - more than a few notable examples have passed on the armband without ever laying claim to such a feat.
