Drogheda United - Sligo Rovers Betting Preview: Back the visitors to reach the final at a solid price

Although the League of Ireland Cup semi-final is between the top two sides in the league, Adam Bate expects the Bit o' Red's incredible head-to-head record to continue on Monday
It’s the League of Ireland Cup semi-finals on Monday and the favourites to win the tournament will surely be the winners of the clash between Drogheda United and Sligo Rovers.

Sligo currently top the League of Ireland table with Drogheda their nearest challengers in second place.

Drogheda have home advantage in this semi-final and will be hoping that will prove crucial as they seek to win this competition for the first time since 1984.

Drogheda are 11/5 (3.2) to win the match in the 90 minutes and 5/4 (2.25) with Paddy Power to qualify for the final.

The advantage of playing in front of their own fans is not quite enough to convince the bookmakers that Drogheda are favourites, despite being just three points adrift of Sligo in the league.

But there’s a very good reason for that – the astonishing recent record between these two sides.

Amazingly, Rovers have won the last nine meetings between the two teams and are unbeaten against Monday’s opponents in their last 17 matches.

If you think past form is not a true indicator, consider that United had won six on the bounce before facing Sligo on Saturday – but still crashed to a 4-1 defeat. This is a hoodoo.

Sligo are 23/20 (2.15) to win in the 90 and 4/7 (1.57) favourites with Paddy Power to qualify for the final. The draw is available at 9/4 (3.25).

The Sligo victory inside normal time has to be the pick of the bets in this one given their phenomenal head-to-head record.

For the value bet, look at the fact that Sligo have scored 28 goals to Drogheda’s five in those last nine victories.

An early away goal in this one could be hugely damaging psychologically for the hosts. It certainly proved that way at the weekend when Sligo went two goals up before the break.

In fact, the league leaders have led at the interval – and gone on to win – eight of the previous nine matches between the sides.

As a result, the value bet is to back Sligo in the HT/FT betting at 13/5 (3.6) with Paddy Power.

Sligo Rovers to win at 23/20 (2.15) with Paddy Power
Sligo Rovers HT/FT at 13/5 (3.60) with Paddy Power
